Oct 9, 2013 8:40 AM in response to carolplus6by stevejobsfan0123,If an app requires iOS 5.0 or later, but an older version of the app required an older version of iOS, you can now download the older app version:

Oct 14, 2013 8:40 AM in response to stevejobsfan0123by grendelmon,I was just about to post this news as well.
Great move on Apple's part.
Of course, it was their poor design in iTunes that removed the apps I have *paid for* on my older device while syncing. I see this as Apple backtracking and fixing what they themselves originally broke.
In any case, my Touch 2nd Gen has new life again. Thanks for posting!
Cheers,
Grendelmon

Dec 3, 2013 3:48 PM in response to houdgardby greenmind, houdgard wrote, "At this point a newer device would resolve the problem." My only question is, but for how long? 5 years, 3 years, or only 1 year ... I can absolutely see no safe reason to spend hundreds of dollars on a new iphone, considering the obvious planned obsolescence. Since Steve Jobs death, I can notes dozens of new examples of this. Apple, remember that the economy is hurting, and people don't have the same amount of dispossable income.

Dec 3, 2013 8:34 PM in response to greenmindby deggie,And can you point to many instances of this before he left the company? How about the switch to OS X from Classic? Switch from PowerPC to Intel? How about the orginal iPhone?
-
Dec 4, 2013 6:20 AM in response to deggieby grendelmon,What greenmind says is true. Their desktop platform doesn't even come close to the obsolescence of their mobile platform. The transitions of MacOS as well as their processor platforms were inconvenient, but they at least made an effort to extend the life of the older generation platforms (68k emulation, OS 9 Classic within OS X, Rosetta, etc).
iOS is a whole different beast. Apple is obviously betting on people to upgrade their devices. They are obsolete in just a matter of years. The economy is still in the toilet, and Apple is beginning to understand this. They are losing marketshare. Low-cost buyers aren't interested in Apple products because they are too expensive. The iPhone 5C was the obvious response to this. This also explains why they are still manufacturing the 4S, as well as the iPad 2.

Dec 5, 2013 7:31 AM in response to Brevoort43214by tennis54321,Do you have any texting apps that are free for 4.2.1?
-
Dec 5, 2013 7:45 AM in response to tennis54321by grendelmon,I believe that Pinger has an older Texting app that still works in 4.2.1. I don't have my 2nd gen with me, but I think I have it installed on it.
