I've been recording for a while in Garageband and havent had a problem but all of a sudden the vocals have been giving me issues. When i record vocals the volume bar for that individual track goes into the red and the vocals crack or distort. When i record at a lower Mic level, this issue is avoided but then the vocals are too quiet.
I dont understand why this has just happened now?! :S

Maybe you tell us how you are recording your vocals.
I'm guessing you use to use the Automatic Level Control. You can turn it back on in the track info window.
Im using a USB microphone samson condenser, I standard at good distance (the normal distance for all my recordings).
And nope i've never used the Automatic Level Control

This only happens in Garageband, if i record in any other software it is fine. There is no crackles.
You can check the sample rate, if the rate is too high it will cause crakling.
What should the sample rate be? I've kept mine as it has been for ages. The other tracks i previously record have been fine.
You want your sample rate as high as it will secord clean. If the samle rate is too high from the source/recorder, to big a difference, you end up wth crackling, because tose atrifacts are "holes" or missing data. Hope that helps explain the check your sample rate as a possible cause of the crackling you were hearing. Peace
