I-phone won't "discover" blue tooth

My I-phone 5 doesn't discover the blue tooth accessory I just got for Christmas.

I received a Memorex BlueTooth speaker to listen to music on in my home.

Why doesn't my phone "discover" the blue tooth?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.2
