Whenever I plug my iPod into my PC, the iPod screen blinks "do not disconnect". What do I do so that I can restore my iPod?

Whenever I plug my iPod into my PC, the iPod screen blinks "do not disconnect". What do I do so that I can restore my iPod. Also, once I unplug it, the screen says to use iTunes to restore, but iTunes doesnt register the iPod.
