I think you need the latest software on your MBA. And if you have the first generation of ATV, I don't think AirPlay works with that unit.

Do you have OS x 10.8 Mountain Lion, any earlier OS such as Lion will NOT mirror. It is not an update it is a purchase from the app store.

Third party apps such as airparrot or reflectorapp can help too.
