Smart Case not providing adequate rear protection- dents on rear of iPad

I bought the Smart Case for my iPad 3rd generation specifically so that it would protect the back as well as the front of the device. After a few months of use, there is a faint dent on the aluminum casing on the back. I take great care of it and it is in excellent condition otherwise. I want to take both the smart cover and iPad back for replacement because the iPad can not handle a moderate amount of protection. Has anybody else had similar issues with rear protection with the Smart Cover and received a replacement?

How does something that only covers the front of the device afford any protection to the back of the device?

Apple warranty does not cover physical damage or abuse, only manufacturing defects or hardware failure.

Oh yeah I forgot-it's a smart COVER, not case.

Did you buy a Smart Case? Or a Smart Cover? You reference both. The Smart Case is certainly not advertised to be impact resistant. However, only Apple can tell you what they will cover under warranty. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store and find out.
