I have an early 2007 versopm pf Aperture that my current OS system, 10.7.5, cannot even read! Can I upgrade to a recent or latest version? Or do I have to buy it again?

Free updates are only between minor version changes, as long as the first digit of the version umber stays the same. But the change from Aperture 2.x.x to Aperture 3.x.x is a major new release, so it requires a new purchase.
But you will find that Aperture sold at the App Store is no longer as expensive as your first Aperture has been.
