My MacBook will not connect via Bluetooth to my iHome iDM8

For Christmas, I got an iHome iDM8 portable rechargeable Bluetooth speaker. I got it set up with my iPhone just great, and it works and sounds fine. On the packaging, it says it connects with everything (iPhone, iPad, Laptop, etc.). I tried to set it up with my MacBook, and it would not work.

The device does display in the Bluetooth section of System Prefenrences, but I can not figure out how to connect it. On the iHome device, you hold down the play/pause button, and then it makes a double bleep noise. Then, you are able to pair it. (On my iPhone, this is when I click the device name and it workds just fine.) After the double bleep, I try clicking the name on my Mac, but it will not change to "connected". I've also seen on help websites that you click the settings gear at the bottom and choose "use as audio device". When I click that, nothing happens either.

I'm just looking for some advice on how to do this! I can not figure it out for the life of me.

Thanks!
