I am worried about buying the iPhone 5 too. 3-4 years from now we might have an essential App on there that Apple will not allow to run, such as WhatsApp on the iPhone 3G now.. I first thought that WhatsApp is to blame here, but it does still run on a 5 year old Nokia 5800. So, Apple seems to be the problem here. So, where do we go from here? Samsung S3/S4, Lumia 920? Not so sure about the Blackberry Z10. Lots of issues with BIS before.

Apologies for this much delayed addition to this discussion, but if there's any hope that apple actually do read their own discussion forums, I would like to add that that this is totally unacceptable. I can bet my bottom dollar that this would not have been this way if Steve Jobs was still around. I realize that app developers also have a responsibility to keep their users happy and able to use their apps (in which ever form or "version" they might need them, for which ever device) and especially since they paid for them, but at what point will apple actually step in and sort this out?

I have a perfectly functional I-phone 3G, on iOS version 4.2.1. I have tried everything from jail breaking it, restoring it, and attempting to hunt down the older versions of my chosen apps in order to use this great device to it's fullest potential. Currently, it's lying in my top drawer of my desk, and it's most valuable use to me now is as a defense mechanism should I ever find the need for it. It's sad that Steve Job's vision for Apple has come to that. Even if it's just a silly little phone. It's still a GREAT phone, but of absolutely no use to me.

What a waste.

Sort this out Apple!

Sigh. No, Apple is not reading this thread (except when the Hosts are notified of a violation of the Terms of Use). And, Whatsapp is NOT an Apple product. Apple has no control over the developer. You should be submitting feedback to them.

Best of luck.

Sorry but I don't think that's an accurate answer. Apple ceased to support iOS 4.2.1 and former versions sometime around iOS 6 I think. Developers were not enabled to support iOS 4.2.1 and 6. If they wanted to say that their apps were iOS 6 compatible, they had to drop support for 4.2.1. Since iPhone 3G can't be updated past 4.2.1 that means that Apple indirectly left the iPhone 3G out of the picture.

Really? So what prevented developers providing apps that would run under either OS? If you manufacture carpets for a car and then the car manufacturere redesigns that car it is the fault of the car manufacturer that those carpets no longer fit?

Same reason for me to have moved to Android from Iphone. Atleast buying a new phone is a choice and not a compulsion because my old phone has stopped supporting apps...

I'm glad you've found the tool that best meets your needs. I guess we won't be seeing you in this forum anymore as you won't have any iPhone technical support questions.

Best of luck.
