Hi There,

Like you and many others, I have searched the internet looking for a solution on this, BUT I have found the solution to this. Rather than trying alcohol, or pushing in the IPOD which could potentially damage it, try this:

Hold the Ipod with the headphone jack facing downwards. Take a paperclip and move it around the inside of the headphone jack a few times, pushing as far as you can go. I was shocked when I did this to find a little fluffball fell out of the headphone jack! I don't know if this is a common thing, but it sounds like it. I guess this is collective dust and muck. DO NOT push the headphones as hard as you can as this will push the volume buttons out of place. I also have a slight mark on my screen permanently now when I did this.. DO NOT try alcohol for obvious reasons of damaging the headphone jack input.

I can't thank you enough for your post. I was feeling desperate - expensive iPod, full playlist created, less than a year old, and - no sound! I was using 3rd party headphones that worked fine on other devices, had tried the 'jam them as hard as you can' method etc., no good. Was thinking I'd have to send for repairs (cha-ching!) and lose my playlists.

Then I saw your post and thought "I'll give it a go" got a pin - poked around... and sure enough a little compacted ball of fluff fell out and sound followed. Occam's razor - sure enough the simplest solution is the right one. I guess the fluff was compacted because of jamming the headphones in, I don't know where the fluff came from but I guess it must gather over time, and maybe there's some static issue that attracts it to the inside of the headphone jack. It acted as an insulator preventing connection with the headphones and might explain to some people why their headphones weren't going in all the way.

I'd recommend your solution first to anyone else having this problem. Cheer again.

Before doing any of the other things recommended here, try using a pin or small paperclip to gently poke round in the headphone socket and see if there's a little ball of lint / fluff that you can dislodge. Then try your headphones again, as normal, and see if you get sound.

I'm not the first person to post this solution so credit must go to PaddyMcD who suggested it before I did.
