As others have commented, you REALLY have to exert inward pressure (almost to the point where you fear breaking something). The white plastic insulation of the headphone jack has to be TOUCHING the iPod case. If you can see silver between the case and headphone jack white plastic, the jack is not inserted far enough. My wife actually figured this out (I am officially mortified).
Worked AFTER using your tip, thanks so much! Boy I went through three defective iphones years agoand vowed never again, Apple, so when I could not get my brand-new nano pod to make a sound today, whoa. But you fixed it! Thanks so much several years later!
Hello.I had the same problem with my 7g Nano.Befre sticking any paperclip in it i went to Service Menu and i stated that headphones are working on both channels (tones on each channel) and even 2s recording did work fine and i was able to listen to it on my headphones.
Radio passthrough did fine too.
I later downgraded it to firmware 1.0.2 and it worked fine.
Updating again to 1.0.4 made it break again.
Downgrade to 1.0.2 and it works flawlessly.
So i think there;s a bug in the formware. Apple?please fix it!
I want to thank the people who suggested using alcohol to clean the port for the headphone. It works perfectly and the nano is no longer just used as a fake phone for my grandkids. Take as much cotton off as you have to so that it fits and soak it well. I rub it for about fifteen seconds around and up and down. Then I used the other end to dry it out. Thanks again to the suggestions from the community. P.S. Congratulations to the people whose answers were jamming their headphone jack in even farther, I wrecked a good pair trying that suggestion.
Make sure that your havent toggled the mute button. đ

Check if the plug is fully inserted. New ipod nano is sometimes difficult to insert the headphone plug.
Thank you, up and running!
Having same problem with My 7th Gen and no sound. Earpods work with my computer. Nano appears to be playing songs.
I have inserted the earpod plug in as far as it will go into nano and moved it around without success. Where is the
mute button you suggested may be the problem? I have scoured the nano manual and can't find anything about
a mute button.
This has been a very frustrating device. My first apple product.
Thanks for your help.....đ
There is no mute button. Was your ipod nano working before or is it brand new?
It is brand new
If this is the case, I recommend to visit Apple store and request for replacement. Cheers!
Just bought a new ipod downloaded my music ok but no sound have tried to find mute button and did try ear phones on my computer only left side seems to work. I NEED HELP
There is no mute button. But what do you mean of only left side is working?
I mean my ear phone is only working on the left side not on the right when I plugged them into my computer
I think this is a problem with your earphone. Have you tried other earphones?
