Q: how to upgrade iphone 3gs software

I have problem with my whatsapp and it mentioned that I need a newer os to upgrade. Fyi I using iphone 3GS ver 3.1.2

If you do so, you will get IOS 6 and that makes my iphone 3GS very slow. My question in relation to the problem surewinn describes is, is there a way to download IOS 4.3. If so, the problem with Whatsapp is solved, I think.
