Iphone 3GS battery blew up / expanded

Two days ago (it was Christmas eve) my 1,5 year old 3GS just started to expand (like universe). Touch pop-uped, motherboard has been bended and battery looked like a pillow 😀 I'm really dissapointed because it was Christmas and my Apple product have self-destruction option that I didn't activate. Now, this phone is only for garbage because motherboard is destroyed and display have few spots in the middle. From the first day, I used only original Apple charger and data cable. This iphone was never near heat source etc.

It's really like a cheap chinese product....but I paid it like a gold one year ago -.-'

Take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

Take both the 3 GS and the charging adapter to Apple.

My warranty has expired so I'm not shure that they will take any action :/ But, it's not normally for iPhone that has never been in some extreme conditions, never fell,...

I feel lucky I didn't get any injury from this "explosion". I googled and find out that I'm not only one with incident. Rep-- for Apple

It is called a defective battery. As you've already been told twice take it to the Apple Store.

Even though your warranty has expired take it to an Apple store for evaluation/replacement. This is a safety issue and, unfortunately, not uncommon with NiMH rechargeable batteries. Ask to see the store manager if necessary.

True, but this type of thing also occurs with Lithium Polymer batteries on occassion.

Thank you for information. Next week I'm going to Zagreb (Croatia; this is my nearest Apple center) and I will try to check what can they do. As you said, this is totally safety issue and they should take some actions.

OK, I stand corrected. However, it is an unfortunate fact that many types of compact, rechargeable cells used in laptops, mobile phones etc. are prone to overheating/explosion.

They are not "prone" to it, but due to contamination in manufacturing it does occur in a small percentage.

Considering this post was from 3 years ago, it wouldn't really matter. Only Apple will determine what, if anything, they would do.

actually I was spoke with Apple care, I dont speak 100% english and they was put me to China apple centre from Aus, the problem is a guy from China said : its not under warranty and was not a safety issue also they won take any respobility because the problem was on my phone. OMG in fact there is nothing to do with warranty or older phone!! its was def about the safety issue. fortunately the phone was not in my pocket, or what if it blew up when I speak on the phone?

His respond is really annoying! Thats why again I was called to Aus apple centre and some one them said will gets back to me if they can do anything like fix it for free of charge! but again it is about the safely issue dont you think so?

Apologise if my english confuse you :-)

You will have to contact whatever country the device was purchased in. The iPhone warranty is not international. You can use the Contact Us link at the bottom of the pages here, but no one on the forum would be able to assist you. We are users here, and have no influence on this.
