Q: how to set up photo stream on my computer

First go to Systems Preferences->iCloud->Photo Steam and set up the options as you wish.

Then in Aperture go to Preferences->Photo Stream and again enable it as you wish.

In the iCloud panel of the System Preferences enable the checkbox besides the Photostream icon, then press the "options" button. Have you done it this way? What do you mean by

"but when I pressed Photo Steam I can't"? Are buttons missing or unresponsive? It should work like Frank described.

This looks like you do not yet have an iPhoto version or Aperture version, that supports Photo stream. What is your version? You need  iPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4 or later.

O, with iPhoto 8.1.2 you cannot use Photo stream; you need to upgrade to 9.4.2, but this upgrade is not free. But do you have Aperture 3.4? That should suffice.

Have you used Aperture at all before? I simply assumed you have, since you are posting in the Aperture forum. If not, and if you only have an iPhoto Library, you will need iPhoto 9.4 as well to upgrade your photo library. Then it would be more economical to upgrade your current iPhoto version to iPhoto 9.4. The step to switch from iPhoto to Aperture should not be taken lightly; Aperture is a very advanced program compared to iPhoto, and you will need some time to learn properly to use it.

I hope Frank will chime in again; he has some great posts explaining the difference.
