My iMac WiFi is extremely slow!!! Help me fix

I have tried so many things to get my WiFi to run faster than what it is now, It's physically making me impatient. I have done a internet speedtest from the mac and the results are -

Ping - 51ms

Download speed - 0.09mbps

Upload speed - 0.49mbps

I even made a youtube video on what is actually happening.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjd5k817hn4

What I don't understand is, Why is my macs WiFi so terrible? It's fully connected to the internet.

I have updated the mac and it didn't seem to change in its perfomance.

The iMac is new and it runs everything nice, just the internet is slow as anything.

Now, Let me compare the results to my pc.

Ping - 50ms

Download speed - 3.66 mb/s

Upload speed - 0.778 mb/s

And now my ipad -

Download speed 3.21 mb/s

Upload speed 0.686 mb/s

All these tests were done when there was only ONE device connected to the internet.

Please, Help me fix my problem! I can't even load apples website without waiting 20 minutes!

MY WIFI IS FIXED!

Now, Here is the problem...

The problem was not the iMac, It was infact the internet provider! All I had to do was switch channels on the internet settings in the search bar. I had to type in a certain ip and it would bring me to my internet options, I then changed my wifi channel to 11. And boom!

My results are now...

Ping - 25ms

Download Speed - 3.32mbps

Upload Speed - 0.84mbps

(It will go higher in a few days as the new router needs 10 days to configure)

Thank you everyone for your help! And I hope this helps people with the same problem as me!

Any questions, I'll answer, Thank you yet again for everyones help and support!

Well, I just got home all excited and set up my new iMac which is scarce in supply. I set it up and I cannot believe what I'm seeing! It takes ages to open anything!! It's worse than my 6 year old virus ridden Thinkpad that crashed last month. I am on my new Lenovo IdeaPad U510 which I was about to return because there's no human being in North American (although I bought the in home care) ... and it's ripping at warp speed.

This is my first Mac after a lot of pressure from my daughter who got a MacPro for school and it works very fast. But this is ridiculous!!

Talk about routers?! Mine is about 8 years old. Why is my new Lenovo IdeaPad zipping along, 1 foot away from the iMac - both running on WiFi on an 8 year router. I feel like I've returned to the dark ages with my new IMac which cost me $1700 with Applecare. I have 13 days left to return the iMac and aboutthe same to get a refund for my Lenovo - if Apple 1-800 support line doesn't fix this over the phone with a couple of directions - guess which one is going bac? Maybe I keep the Ipad!

This is a very bad first impression for a long term PC user.

And I just had to adapt to Windows 8 - I kinda of like it now after 3 weeks of playing around. It's fast and neat!

So what is the real problem with the iMac

Jan 27, 2013 6:09 AM in response to StanCooper

I've been having intermitten wifi issues with new iMac since day 1.

I was messing about with everything yesterday and when i did speedtest i was getting the expected 90mbit down / 9mbit up

Three hours later and my work laptop sat next to my iMac is getting 97mbit down/9up and iMac is getting 34mbit down.

Only thing that happened was iMac went to sleep ...

Think there is something really wrong with either this iMac or OSX ... i'm thinking iMac cos my older 2009 iMac was on same network for years fine ... only until this new one came have i started getting issues.

Ok so tonight I changed the channel on the router to 8 (changing to ch. 11 didn't do anything). My wireless speed went through the roof!!!! My new iMac now is the fastest device in my house. I don't know why channel 8 is the magic number, but I encourage you to try them ALL!!!

This issue really bothered me and I'm so pleased with my download speeds now!!!!

Yes, I tried 8 and 11 but really they are arbitrary. Just try them starting from 1 until your speed improves. 8 and 11 didn't work for me, but 9 did the trick!

It probably depends somewhat on what other channels around you are being used by other people. If there are too many people on your channel you may have problems.

For my netgear modem there was a "wireless settings" link on the left and you changed the channel there.

Yes in Safari.

U put this in safari:

192.168.0.1 (this may be different, you'd have to check your router user manual)

hit enter, and then login. usually, if you haven't changed it the login is "admin" and password is "password".

then there should be something like "wireless settings" down the left side. and in there somewhere is "channel" which you can change 🙂

You can go to network settings to see what your router address is, if you are uncertain, but its

mostl likely 192.168.0.1.

Wireless Setup, then "Radio" or something similar depending on the specific router.

New router, old router? With Netgear you may have to log into the Netgear site (some of their older routers, the Super G I think was one such - could not be set directly using a Mac, believe it or not. You HAD to go to their support page).
