Somehow I deleted the rocket icon for launchpad from my desktop. How do I get the rock icon back?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

Open Finder, select Applications in the sidebar and drag Launchpad icon to the Dock

If you deleted it from the Dock, simply drag it from the Applications Folder back into the Dock.
