Post- logic board replacement, here are some thoughts:

Regarding GFXCardStatus, I guess you have to switch to "Integrated" before launching a program that uses the discrete card. But don't many graphics/video programs *require* the discrete card?

My big concern now is the heat that is still being created here. My fans are running at 5000rpm and the temperature is still 88º C. that's very hot right? I feer it will lead to another breakage of the Gpu.

Well my first post was deleted by apple--they didn't like me sharing the negative experience I had at their store.Let's see how many more of my posts get deleted.

I also have an Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro that shows symptoms of this GPU defect, and the apple employees agreed it is a GPU issue. I am paying $310 at the apple store to have the logic board replaced unfortunately. The biggest problem is that it appears the replacement part will probably have the same design flaw and an extremely short warranty.

Down with apple!!!

A couple weeks ago I experienced this GPU problem like most on this thread.

I decided to send email to Tim Cook expressing my disapointment with this product. I explained how my MBP froze with a black screen and blue lines while rendering a Davinci Resolve project, and never booted properly after that, it just freezes on the grey screen. I sent him the Genius Bar diagnostic for Logic Board replacement (496€ repair cost) and also links to this and other threads where hundreds (if not thousands) of people are having the exact same roblem with this computer.

Apple Executive Relations called the next day me to ask me about it and to investigate further my case. I was very impressed by how quickly they got back to me and how friendly and apologetic they were about the problem. I really had hope that Apple would keep up with their reputation of quality products and service by recognizing this fault and extending the warranty of my faulty Macbook Pro Early 2011 i7 Quad 2.3Ghz.

They sent my case up to the engineering department, and they gave me the answer today, wich is as follows:

There is no known issue with GPU failure for this partucular Macbook Pro model, so unfortunately at this time Apple cannot recall your machine for a free repair.

So folks, I would not have much hope on getting a free repair for this problem if you are out of warranty.

noplug,

now that you tried emailing Tim Cook. Why not try bringing your macbook pro to Apple genius bar and ask them to diagnose to determine what the problem is. If they'll bring it in for further testing, just tell them to diagnose. If it's going to cost you, tell them to call you first. But of course, you'll say no to it if it's going to cost you. If you read my previous post, that's what I did. What happened was they ended up replacing the logic board for free and told me that it is causing the gpu to overheat. I mean, there is no harm to go there and try and ask them. You can always say no if it's going to cost you. Good luck.

Followup to my MPB early 2011 17" GPU Failing. Took to Apple store Genius where he correctly diagnosed the problem with the GPU and reccomended replacing the Main Logic Board as I was able to duplicate the problem just by opening Adobe Photoshop and getting the error message about the GPU not functioning and he suggested to get it repaired by apple for the $210 + $100 labor and they will fix or replace anythng that is wrong for the $310 Flat which is a very fair resoulution to a computer that is 2yr 9 months old. Mad that it happened but I think that was cheaper than buying apple care oringinally and they completely cleaned and adjusted the hinge and my computer is like brand new again. I reccomend to anyone this is by far the best solution.

Same Problem ! I bought the macbook pro (early 2011) 2.0 GHZ included extra graphic in June 2011. About 2 Weeks ago i had different screens mostly white with grey stripes. Nothing works anymore I had to restart my mac. I unchecked the graphic rectangle at system energy savings now it seems to work, but I do not know how long it will take to get another malheur.

Apple should react, there are also some threads in german, this is not a single case! If I buy a computer for about 2000 €, which means more then 2500 US, for sake I expect that it works more then 2 1/2 years. Now as a backup because it is my computer I have to use every day for work, I had to invest in a mac mini in case of a failure again of my macbook - Are you serious?

I am in for any and all efforts to get this dealt with. I have had so many issues that Apple has now stopped honoring my Apple Care which is still in effect for nearly a month but my Macbook Pro has been out of usage since Aug 2013.

Inside 2 months (Sept - Nov 2013) they replaced the logic board 3 times, the left and right fans, the optical drive 2 times, ALL wiring as stated it was physically damaged and given the heat issues my guess the damage is the wiring and cables were melted due to heat, the airport has been replaced 2 times, it has 8G of RAM however it only sees 4G or less on boot up with nothing running and after it sits doing nothing after 3 days the RAM drops to 50mb and the machine shuts off. I have nothing running during that time.

I had purchased a iMac at the same time with the same specs with one exception the iMac is a i5 and the Macbook Pro is a i7 everything else is the same and they are special order, with 7200 RPM HD, 8G RAM, Extra 1G on video cards and I don't remember what else but the machines were very expensive high end machines. The iMac was running so hot I burned myself and it has sit in the corner in my music studio turned off for the last 2 1/2 years doing nothing. The Macbook Pro has been my main work station in the studio but it was broken out of the box. The day I received it I called to have it replaced and it was set to be replaced with someone supposed to be calling me however that call never came so I called back two weeks later and they said they decided to do a reinstall and perform some tasks on it to make sure it wasn't a bad install at the factory. I played their games and had figured by this time they knew there was an issue they were trying to keep quiet and since it was very early in the game it was not wide spread yet, only super power users were having issues which Apple denied, and are STILL denying.

After all the reinstalls and tech support tasks which I had done prior to calling in the first place, the machine was still not working properly. The mini display port dropped off, locked up, and required hard boots to get it back. Let me qualify, I use the machine in clamshell mode attached to a large screen monitor, a very expensive high end monitor and I originally thought it was the monitor so I began the process with calling Dell and they very happily replaced my monitor 3 times over night brand new and it became obvious it was not the monitor but I do appreciate Dell taking the initiative and sending me 3 new monitors to try to sort this out.

That was not the only issue, the firewire port did not work at all, the airport dropped off randomly and I had to click on the icon in the title bar and reconnect, the audio port when plugged into my studio equipment did not play the music being recorded in the studio it pulled in a local AM channel that ironically I was a DJ at back in the early 80's, the usb ports worked so I had to buy two usb hubs as well as a M-Audio 4 Track (to bypass the onboard sound) that HAD to be plugged directly into the machine's USB port, the USB hubs were connected one in the open USB port on machine and my monitor USB hub. The machine over heats really bad, it shuts itself off, it locks up and requires a hard boot, the screen does the blue screen, it also has pixelating so bad its difficult if not impossible to make out what is on the screen. The keyboard on the laptop itself isn't always responsive but I use a USB Apple keyboard given I use the machine in clamshell mode. I have an industrial dual fan under it and it is in a clean, open, cold area just as any music studio or any other place with a lot of electronic equipment to prevent over heating.

It has cost me a fortune just to use the machine with all the peripherals I had to purchase. Beginning in Aug 2013 the machine became unusable and still is. It has been in shop 4 times in 2 months and still does not work, it has all the same issues. The third time it went in they used what they refer to white glove and after they had it in the depot for a few days they called me from the depot to tell me they could not reproduce the issues and lucky for me that particular logic board was so defective one of the USB ports had no power. I asked him if they plugged anything in the USB port and he said no we just run stress tests (software test). He plugged a mouse into the USB port and sure enough no power so they replaced the board again. When I received it the machine was still not functioning. Upon bootup the RAM dropped to 1G or less within minutes and the machine shut off, and the optical drive creates a lot of coasters, as well as many of the same issues the machine has had since day one.

While they have been working on that machine I had to use the iMac with the same specs that I bought at the same time and it worked well until a few days ago and it is also showing the very same signs the Macbook Pro has after several months of heavy usage. I bought a Toshiba Windows 8.1 machine special order and I never thought I'd use Windows as I am a *nix/Mac person but I have to work. Lost a client which was a lot of money. It has cost me a fortune to buy software for the Windows machines but there have been some very understanding companies that switched my licenses to Windows at no extra charge mainly because so many music and photography studio's are having the same issues and making the switch to Windows.

It is time for me to buy a new cellphone and I have always gone with the iPhone well not this time, Android here I come. Apple was at one time a reputable company and geared towards music, entertainment, photography and news/magazine businesses however now they seem to be over priced paper weights aimed at the general public. Not honoring my Apple Care is the last straw. A tech, actually he is the supervisor or so he said of the white glove department calls everyone on these boards and other boards trolls that like to make trouble as there is no issues with the machines that Apple acknowledges or is aware of even after the months I had to send my machine in and the fact it is still broken as well as all the reports by others having the same problem. Many people did not buy Apple Care and are stuck with either paying a very large amount to have the logic board replaced which only is a short term fix because the logic board is defective so placing defective parts with defective parts into the machines is only a matter of time before it too is defective and becomes unusable, just as all 3 I have has done.

I am sure Apple will delete this post, it is one way they try to keep a lid on what is actually going on and how they are or as the case may be not handling the issue. I do not believe it is simply the GPU OR it begins with the GPU and over time the faulty GPU and heating issues begins to destroy the rest of the parts on the logic board or attached to it until it is rendered unusable. I have yelled this from the roof tops and have had pow wow's with my friends in the industry (music and photography) and Apple is losing customers at the business level at a high rate and it will become more apparent as some are waiting till their machines become unusable before they make the switch but nobody I know is sticking with Apple especially since they will not even honor my Apple Care without jumping through hoops that are unreasonable and time consuming taking time away from my work and clients.

A class action suit was filed in 2011 however Apple had the site disable any comments and communication of any type with the public. It has not gone to court as far as I know and Apple has not acknowledged the law suit or the issues with the machines. The only satisfaction I have is that I know I have spread the word to some major clients of Apple products that will not remain Apple customers on a global level.

I have documented everything involving my case including scanning in all the return papers claiming my machine is now in good hands, mine. Yet when I boot it up, it does not work. Please understand their software test DOES NOT show this issue up or any issues caused by the problem. They finally opened my machine which is how they found out the cables/wires were visibly defective, as well as abnormal sounds coming from the fans and intermittently the fans stopped running. Do not feel secure if it passes the hardware test because the problem can not been found that way.

I noticed there are multiple threads, and I hope Apple will sit up and do something about this issue. Issue an official announcement, offer a solution, DO SOMETHING APPLE.

Hi

Are there updates on this situation yet?

I am experiencing ALL of the symptons described in this thread, mainly these

1. System hangs with graphics distortion

2. Hard power off and on, but unable to get past grey screen

My Apple Care is estimated to expire on 24 March 2014. It is just bizarre that so many users of the early 2011 MBPs are suffereing the same symptons as well, but no response from Apple as yet.

Just before a crash, the following message is occasionally logged in system.log

$ zgrep -C12 "GPU hang" system*gz | tail -n12 | sed 's/G.*\-Macbook\-Pro/Macbook\-Pro/g'

I'm having similar issues with my MPB Early 2011 15". I had it shut down a couple of times in the last year with the fans at top speeds. It booted back up but took a few minutes to do so. In January it did this again and I couldn't get it to boot unless I booted it in safe mode. I thought I had a bad startup disk and went through the motions to resolve it. Then it started again about a day later after a couple of hours use, surfing facebook and watching some videos on you tube. I followed a bunch of troubleshooting which lead me finally to reinstalling the OS. I did that and then got some weird screen during set up I hadn't ever seen with blue bars running down the screen. I finally got in and it worked for about 4 day then started acting up again. I tried all the steps again only to get to a blue screen that never takes me to the login screen. I had it checked out and the Apple repair person told me my logic board failed. I paid quite a premium for my 2011 MBP and expected to get more than 3 years out of it. I bought the top of the line model, babyed it. Never took it even out of the house to use for fear I might drop it or cause some damage to it. It saddens me that this investment in such a beautiful piece of equipment that works so well crashed so early in it's life. I haven't replaced it yet. Even had I purchased Apple care it would have expired at this point and would not have helped. If I purchase another one after two decades of Apple computers it will be an air with apple care with the expectation of a 3 year life. I'm having to use a back up PC with Windows 8.1 and it's driving me crazy. I miss my MBP and OS X.

I have the same problem. Have been having issues with my 15" MBP purchased 3/22/14 for over a year. Now with the gray screen/blue screen/will not boot issue, I paid $96 for an authorized Apple repair shop to check it out and determined it has a bad logic board. I told him about how hot it runs all the time, too.

I WANT A REPAIR FROM APPLE. They KNOW about this problem from hundreds/thousands of others with this same problem.

Mar 2, 2014 11:50 PM in response to Butterflygail

There is no way they do not know however they deny it. They deny there are any issues at all and have refused to honor my Apple Care which will run out in a couple of weeks. I was told nobody is having any issues that I was the only call they have gotten about this.

I know they are lying, they know they are lying and when business customers like myself pull out of Apple completely they will be laying off everyone with their head in the clouds following directions and lying like the robots they are.

It was time to buy all new company phones, well we have dumped all the iPhones and now have Droid Maxx. We are replacing all computers one by one with Toshiba machines, 1/3 the cost. Am I happy that my company has been forced to turn away from Apple? No, I like Apple and I have a fortune in hardware and software for a Mac shop in my music and photography studios however I had to weigh the down time, lost wages, the refusal to honor my Apple Care warranty and the high price to replace the machines with new machines that will likely fail as well.

As one business owner put it, Apple no longer is aimed at the business end of things they appeal to personal computers for people that want to look cool and have more money than the sense they were given. It will take Apple a very long time to recover from this disaster IF they ever recover from it. People no longer trust that putting down the big bucks they will be getting their money's worth, or that the company policy is to keep their customers happy so the business owners can keep their customers happy and so on.

The Apple name is jaded and three steps away from being a joke that isn't even funny.

Mar 3, 2014 12:12 AM in response to KmS RoX

Dude, if you have Apple Care do not let them off the hook!

Go back to the store, print out the info about this discrete GPU issue, take them to the links on the petition, direct them to the pages on sites like macrumours and appleinsider, if the generic genius refuses, ask to see the manager andf demand your logic board be replaced under the terms of applecare. They can deny it but with the growing weight of evidence, they can no longer deny it exsists and they are duty bound to give you a new logic board under Applecare.

I can't understand what Apple are thinking right now...

Best of luck. Please sign/tweet/email tim cook, you'll find the link dotted around in other posts
