problems with amd gpu on early 2011 macbook pro

Same Problem. Germany - MacBook Pro 15" early 2011.

Same problem. My MacBook Pro 17" Unibody. i7 from May 2011 is frozen. I was coloring a video with DaVinci Resolve when suddenly the screen went to black. I rebooted the system and a grey screen appeared. After of it, I ran the Apple Hardware Test and 1 module of RAM was broken. I replaced both modules (they were under warranty) but the same result, the fantastic "Grey Screen". I ran the Hardware Test again but this time, all was OK while the grey screen still keeps on screen. I´ve tried everything (Repair HD from discs utility, run diskwarrior, Recovery HD, erase and re-install OX from zero, Boot from original DVD, reset SMC, Reset PRAM, boot in safe mode + /sbin/fsck -by + reboot) My boot ROOM version was updated and SMC too. I hate to say that but my HP laptop had not got any issue along the last 8 years. I´m using to write this.

If Apple doesn´t resolve this problem with customers whom spent more than $2000 in their top rated product, it would be unbelievable.

I have exactly the same probleme. MacBook pro 15" Early 2011 started with split screens, stripes and lines, and now it does not even boot up!!! Apple trash!!! This is what happens is you manufacture in China!!

My 15" early 2011 Macbook Pro bit the dust last night. Thankfully it's still covered by Applecare until October, so I handed it in to an Apple store today. I've been told that it'll take 5 - 7 days to get it back, as there's a huge backlog in their service department.

While it will be nice to have a functioning system again, this problem is likely to occur again in a few years as I doubt they've done anything ot resolve this problem on the replacement logic boards. At the very least, Apple should be replacing the logic boards for people who aren't covered by AppleCare.

Hi, I'm having the same problem my Macbook Pro is on the screen is gray. Apple needs to take action and accept that it is a hardware failure because of the graphics card. They asked me $ 700 to change the motherboard in an approved provider ... If Apple does not act and assumes its responsibility more and lose many customers. Greetings to all and a lot of spirit.

Same problem here. Early 2011 MacBook Pro w/ the AMD GPU. My computer started glitching last week, same symptoms as everyone else, and now is essentially a paper weight.

Took it in to the Apple Store and the "Genius" said the best they could do would be a $300+ "depot repair" where they send it out. Fixing in store would be close to $1,000! 😮

The best part of all this? I'm roughly 10 days past my Apple Care warranty. It's almost like my computer self destructed after the 3 years were up.

My MBP Early 2011 just died too! Called in, just outside of warranty, warranty ended on the 11th of March 2014. 😟

Everything I've read up until this point leads me to believe this is not 'user error'. I have a cooling pad for my MBP at home and when at the office it sits on a stand. $3000 and 3 years. BOoo to Apple!

I have a shittly little Toshiba from 2007 and it's still going strong... paid $400 for it.

Time to pony up and fix your product Apple!

You should call in to AppleCare again. Complain a lot and tell them you want the repair done for free since your AppleCare just expired. The first guy I talked to escalated the call to his supervisor and after some more pushing on my end, the supervisor granted an exception for the repair to be done under warranty. Since your AppleCare just expired recently like mine, it might work for you.

I've booked an appointment with the 'genius' bar tomorrow. I'll see what I can do from there.

I tried that first with no luck. From my experience, the Genius Bar employees aren't given much authority in situations like this. The one I met with told me to call the AppleCare support line because they were allowed to make a repair exception.

same problem here : early 2011 15 inch MBP 2.0 GHz with AMD 6490M GPU

a local shop tried to fix prob the by heating the solder of the GPU , fix lasted 1 month ... on ebay there is a guy claiming he can replace the whole GPU and use leaded solder , cost approx 200 eur + shipping ...

I think replacing the logic board won't solve the problem because it lies in bad soldering of the GPU that get loose with heat ...

Same problem here! screen started glitching with lines and freezing up, would initially allow me to reboot, eventually wouldn't even let me do that. Now it tries to start up, shows horizontal lines over the apple logo, then goes to a gray screen while somethign (I think the fan) inside starts spinning fast. When I start up in the safe mode it does the same thing and then goes to the blue screen.

This is in no way an isolated issue! Apple could you help us out here? I've been using macs for over 20 years, have never had anything like this before.

I've the same issue for many months now. I'm nearly in my last days of apple care so I finally got around to making an appointment with an apple "genius" and left my laptop with them yesterday. The work authorisation form quotes $645 for the logic board replacement and labour costs, with apple care that comes down to $0. After reading so many posts about the same issue and the same method of rectification, I am now concerned that a logic board replacement will not address the problem.

Same problem, same screen divided. Sometimes I got also grey vertical lines, and I thought it was the connector of my external Apple Cinema Display. But I came to Mac forums and I realized it is a problem of the GPU. So sad we all have this issue, because I was thinking in using my Macbook 15 inch pro early 2011 longer since it is an upgraded machine. I hope Apple would think to address a fair solution to this problem.
