Q: problems with amd gpu on early 2011 macbook pro

hey

been having problems for the last couple of weeks on lion os and now mountain lion and need some advice

i'm guessing its the graphics card a amd 6750m as when it swithches to the gpu the screen glitches and freezes, ive tried the apple hardware test and it passed that

then i did a gpu test with a novatech bench test and crashed nearly straight away

Photo_2EA9F689-1F20-FA37-5855-A8D1724F2D07.jpg

it's nearly 2 years old and out of apple  warranty but i'm sure under EU law it should be 2 years

whats my options

cheers

One important thing to add: It might happen that this method fails and the board cannot be used any more. Keep in mind that there is a risk. As I heard Apple might than be even more uncool with repair offers, the repair flat cannot be used and it might be more expensive to change the board at an Apple Store than it would have been if you would have done the repair at Apple before trying a third party repair. I have no experiences with that, the only one I can report that it worked fine in my case.

In my case Apple offered the flat rate repair without even looking at the computer (they didn't even turn it on), so it might depend on how lucky or unlucky you get (that said, I didn't reball)

Same problem, same deal. late 2011 15' mac. I'm contemplating 3rd party repair. It's horrible. you'd think it'd at least hit 2 years. but no. Come on apple..

Add me to the list. Started about three months ago after about two years of perfect usage. I finally convinced Apple support to replace the logic board. But within a week after replacement the same behavior resurfaced. The Apple "geniuses" all say the same thing: Reinstall everything from a fresh install of Mountain Lion. I am not convinced this is a software problem. I am however, convinced this is a hardware problem. And likely heat-related: I see a tendency of this kind of error when the bottom of the laptop gets hot.

Pain in the ***. And has shaken my confidence in Apple. This is the first Apple product I've owned since the late 1980s that I would describe as a "lemon".

    Same problem.

Early 2011 15” 2.3 GHz Core i7 AMD Radeon HD 6750M – screen glitches ( Image Distortion, screen blurring, freeze and shift), boot problem ...

FIXED: reballing GPU ~ 50 EUR and now I’m more vigilant with internal system temperature:

    1. Installed FanControl – and change (in more aggressive way) relation of fan speed – sensor temperature.
    2. I use laptop with an external monitor – now my lid is always open !!!
    3. I use a simple cooling pad
    4. I use only occasionally Windows virtual machine (Parallels).

    Good luck.

I did the same. Better now, but still fail from time to time. Under intense graphics applications is crashing in a couple of minutes.

Is working, but still fail when is getting hot. So, if you use Photoshop, Lightroom, a game, or any other app that needs graphic power, it's crashing. For some people work very good. For me just partial.

Add me to the list. This was my first Apple computer and will be my last. It's was a great computer but not for 2.5x the price of the equivalent Dell.

same problem here too - Macbook pro early i7 quad core 2011 17"

GPU was playing up, graphics cards not switching properly, then crashing, rebooting with blue lines and blue screen, random graphics issues like dots all over screen and then finally just not turning on at all past boot with thick lines in blue.

I have extended warranty, however Apple are currently contending / deciding whether a dent that happened a long time prior might have lead up to this!  Could this be after such a long time? I feel this is a known issue with these graphics cards and Apple should perhaps recognise this as a "KNOWN ISSUE" with so many people with the same issue....  a premium laptop like mine should last 3 years at least I would have thought? Apple should repair under warranty I would have thought and not try to blame an old dent in the machine!

geeze. just type in AMD 6750 failure into google and see it's not just a few of us.
