Dec 2, 2013 3:13 PM in response to djanderzby samskara,It appears as though A PEAK NUMBER of these defective models are breaking around September 2013. It's beginning to look fairly undeniable that there's a problem. So long as this doesn't kill the company, my guess is that Apple will be forced to acknowledge their disappointed customers and make things right. Below is a description of my Mac-Maladies...
MacBook Model: MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011)
Serial Number: C0*******RJN
Case Number: ****
Country or Region: USA
Details: After 2 years with zero problems, I observed a video anomaly after plugging in an external monitor for extended desktop. Shortly after it froze. I somehow got it to reboot, took it into the apple store. They said they didn’t know what the problem was, tested memory, said they could send it out for repair at $310 flat rate. I told them I want to be sure about what’s causing the problem before I agree to pay, so I took it home. Extensive troubleshooting combined with online research, finally led me to understand that the problem is with the AMD processor, and that it is degenerative (ie; it keeps getting worse over time). Currently I can run the machine just fine, as long as I don’t run an app or perform a function which causes the GPU to switch from Intel to AMD; as it is certain to freeze when the switch is made, or shortly thereafter. Sometimes the AMD GPU works for a limited period of time ––it seems that when a certain threshold of shared memory in reserve for graphics is met, bam! Corruption and freeze. Bummer because the AMD is the EFI boot device, so it wants to white screen at restart after a freeze occurs. I have to trick it by first restarting and clearing PRAM, then plugging in the MacBook Pro, then booting in to Recovery, which it does. Then while in Recovery screen, UNPLUG the power cord –which signals lower energy consumption and thus means a higher threshold before AMD will be switched-to, then reboot from Recovery mode while still unplugged. That clears the reserved memory back to default, apparently. Anyway, I can’t use most of the apps that I require for it to be useful. I would like Apple to acknowledge the defect and help us –their loyal customers– at the very least, get into a newer, dependable model at little or discounted cost. I am hesitant to pay for repair when they will not only be replacing my logic board with an identically defective part, but chances are the part will be a “factory reconditioned” part –meaning not brand new –meaning LESS than 2 years of use left. COME ON APPLE, PLEASE TAKE CARE OF US. WE ARE YOUR GREATEST ADVOCATES, NOT YOU’RE ADVERSARIES. MAKE A GESTURE, AND I ASSURE YOU IT WILL GO FAR. MAKE STEVE PROUD –REST HIS SOUL.

Oct 22, 2013 2:54 PM in response to samskaraby MJSfoto1956,you have described the behavior precisely. It mirrors my own experience exactly (approx 2yrs of problem-free behavior then begininng in August and endless number of crashes and bluescreens)
My experience with big companies is not hopeful: being a publicly-traded company, they will likely do everything in their power to deny and/or bury any such "anecdotal" evidence.
The "Geniuses" aren't much help: first time they reinstalled Mountain Lion, but the problem came back immediately. 2nd time they reluctantly agreed it was the logic board, which they claim they replaced. Trouble is, the very next day I got the same behavior. So either their replacement logic boards are also defective, or they just "inspected" my logic board and called it ok.
I intend on returning with JUST a virgin install of Mountain Lion and only need a repeatable situation to force them to replace the logic board again. I'm currently leaning towards using an external Cinema Display -- it seems plugging this in reliable fails after about 20 minutes or so.

Oct 23, 2013 3:50 PM in response to djanderzby migcabrera,Same problem. MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011.
Somebody knows if the new OSX Mavericks solve the graphics card problems in Macbook Pro early 2011?
No repair extension program yet?

Oct 23, 2013 10:30 PM in response to djanderzby RioMacUser,Of course not... our problem is a HW issue, not from SW. It has been proved after many clean installs, downgrades, etc...
Our hope is Apple realize they are loosing credibility and replace our machines.

Oct 24, 2013 6:55 AM in response to migcabreraby dagoble,Shortly after installing Mountain Lion my MacBook Pro developed the symptoms described in this thread.
Entering Time Machine, invoking Photobooth or iPhoto seemed to be the trigger. I found gfxCardStatus and discovered that booting system to white screen hang and allowing system to shut itself down normally resulted in the following boot being successful. Once up using gfxCardStatus for integrated gpu resulted in a useable system.
I installed Mavericks as soon as it was available. I noticed that iPhoto had been updated with fixes and 64 bit support. Knock-on-wood, I'm not using gfxCardStatus and have NOT had any problems booting or hangs using Time Capsule, iPhoto, or Photobooth. Using System Info I see gpu switch occurring. I've been shutting my system down or restarting several times each day and am hoping this good behavior continues. I see that iPhoto has a stability fix. I've also noticed that my system seems to not be running has hot to the touch as before perhaps this is Mavericks power management and as suggested below is the reason I haven't had the problem.

The issue started a week ago with blue screens and freezing.

Oct 28, 2013 10:30 PM in response to djanderzby uzwane,Just to add to the thread: Same problem here. MacBook Pro early 2011, started giving problems where it could not boot and gave a blue screen if I could get it to boot. Took it to the local Apple authorized support dealer and they confirmed the logic board need to be replaced.
