No, it is not. Sooner or later it will fail again. I have tried the direct heating twice and it lasted for maybe 3 weeks. If one is lucky it can hold for maybe few months but there is no permanent fix but replacing the chip. Ive tried this bacause for me phone without wifi is a junk but I killed the phone. It is really not easy to replace the chip so I don't recommend this.

Hi Birjest, I have the same issues with the grey out of my 4S, when it first started was the wifi is on and then goes off and can not get it back no matter how hard you press the wifi button for some time, and then comes back again.I turn the power off and on, then the wifi starts again for few time. and then it turns grey and can never comes back. Did you said you get an replacement phone after a year warranty out ? If so, what did you plain to the apply support to get the new phone? My 4s is 2.5 years old and also out out warranty and was traveling in HK when this wifi grey out. The HK apply can do nothing about the issue. Thank you for your response. John

I solved this problem and it cost me nothing.

My issue was that the wifi was greyed out and I could not tap it on, it was like the option had frozen.

I tried all of the resets, rebooting wifi router and the rest, none of these solutions worked for me.

Incredibly, to my surprise the hairdryer solution worked. I was very doubtful so did this last, but it did the trick.

I cannot imagine Apple suggesting the hair dryer as the solution to fixing it, I mean the liability, as inevitably someone will not follow the simple instructions and manage to melt their phone and burn down their house. Plus sounds crazy, what kind of multi billion dollar company would tell you do that?

I cannot imagine it either, as Apple has not recommended the 'hair dryer method' to anyone.

OK so how come apple has not come up with a reset that shuts down the phone like a deep battery cycle or an over heat shout down

obviously the problem is programing and how come they don't fix it, i have gong true 3 up dates and it still happens. I just preformed the over heat repair for the 8th time. its hard in the screen. I had to unlock my phone to use local provider Sim and that ends my warranty.so replacement is not an option. what will they do to fix this problem the 4s has ?

p.s. no i can't go to a local apple store
