Q: wifi greyed out iphone 4s

Under what logic on earth are you defending apple since you are acknowledging there is a problem ( whether it is hardware or software who cares ! )

facts are :

     - everyone experiencing the wifi problem has experienced it AFTER upgrading to IOS 6, whatever are the diagnostics, the conclusion is that we have DEFECTED handsets

in my opinion, there are specific wifi chips with specific firmware revisions on 4S that are conflicting with this IOS. not all 4S are exactly the same.

why didnt apple release an official reply so people can replace those wifi ships at least with the right ones ?

It is a strategical mistake since all those experiencing this problem and people around them are convinced apple is no longer what it used to be..

not to count also what influences those people could have on the media and others

acknowledging the problem would cost them less a lot less since we are living the social media world where **** hit the fan very quickly  ...

It is because of this "WiFi greyed out" issue that I never updated my 4S to iOS 6. It is currently still on 5.1.1. I really want to update to iOS 7 but are too scared of running into the "WiFi greyed out brick wall", especially since my phone is now 2 months out of it's warranty.

I was just wondering if this error could have been caused by updating OTA and not through iTunes? Updating through iTunes will not put the WiFi chip under any strain (heat) compared to an OTA update.

It would be interesting to see how many of the 4S phones that are having WiFi problems updated OTA and how many through iTunes.

As things stand now, it would seem as if I will be on iOS 5.1.1 for the life of my 4S, which is actually a sad, sad situation!

I also am still at 5.1.1 on my 4S.  I am so grateful that I did not update to iOS 6. My heart goes out to all here with this wifi problem. Being an avid (and sole) Mac user since the earlier days and and iPhone user since the iPhone 3, this issue has caused me to open my eyes to the ANdroid OS phones. They have come a looooong way. When my wife (whose laptop and work machines are PCs) lost her iPhone 4 a few months back and really wanted a large screen, we decided it was fine for her to leave the iOS since her world was PC based. Now, experiencing what her (LG G Pro) Android device is able to do that my 4S cannot, I will go Android when I am up for a new AT&T phone in March.

THis stonewalling on Apple corporates part is angering. I assume they have analized the numbers and found that admitting this problem might cause a chink in their PR image, so better to lose the customers they do who are affected by this. They will probably sell net more handsets this way. Very sad from a devoted Apple fan of so many years. I will of course keep my Mac, but adios iOS soon.

If the hardware defect is not reported to the manufacturer until AFTER the warranty has expired, then the manufacturer has no legal obligations whatsoever.  The fact that Apple is offering a discounted replacement for out-of-warranty devices demonstrates their good faith.

And your facts are wrong.  Not everyone with a wi-fi issue has experienced it after an iOS update.  There is proof of this on this very website.  It's a hardware issue, not a software one. The fact that you don't believe it or don't understand it doesn't make that fact untrue.

Somebody needs to close this thread. This has gone too far with opinions (and updates).

iOS5 works for you? Balloons and candy for you!

iOS6 and iOS7 grayes out WiFi? YES. LIVE WITH IT. If NO, LIVE WITH IT!

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion so go down that road and camp on it if you want. The rest of the world has everything to know about "grayed out WiFi" on the 4S iPhone.

It is known the problem is the chip itself! Overheats....shuts off...byebye wifi...whether ghondi or bob the builder has an iphone, its the same thing.

IMO, I'm tired of hearing about the wifi issue. Plenty of information on this thread cluttering Apple Communities with truckloads of informative info. So close and be done. JMO.

It's funny that this is a furom on Apple's site and no one from the moderators even care...

Here's an update Guys...

Heating up the phone with hairdyer usually works for me, even lasted for about two months...

After updating to ios 7, the trick still works but it wouldn't last even for a day... (just hours)

I'll try to go back to 6.1.3, hoping I can...

I have saved what  I needed before upgrading, so I'll try downgrading later...

I encountered the disabled wifi issue after upgrading my iphone 4S to iOS7 whilst roaming in Canada. Bluetooth also greyed out subsequently. The Apple Genius there spent an hour explaining  that this was a hardware problem, offered me a replacement 4s for $ 200 which I declined. Considered buying a new 5s but was told no guarantee that this model would work where I normally reside in Asia, due to LTE frequency band variations, and in any case would need a new nano SIM from my home service network provider. All very frustrating.

After returning to Asia I spoke to my service provider who was unable to help apart from suggesting I buy a 5 or wait for a couple of months for them to launch the 5s locally.

Finally got lucky when a local dealer offered to repair my 4s by replacing the wifi chip for $60 which took less than an hour and had my phone back to full functionality with just a simple reboot, although I had done a full backup beforehand as a precaution.

A sorry saga. We love Apple, but wonder why the world's most valuable brand sometimes treats its customers with such disdain.

My wife's phone is doing the exact same thing. iPhone 4s 64G and soon as ios7 was installed the battery life has gone down the drain (yes I did all the suggested fixes to cut down on the battery drain), but the battery just drains for no reason. It was at 100% this afternoon and now it is at 23% and the phone has been sitting on the dresser not doing anything. Also the Wifi is greyed out. The phone is mint and has always been in an otter box. I am not going to try to freeze or heat my phone, it is clearly something with the update to ios 7. My wife was so mad about the battery thinking it wa apples way of making people ugrade to a new phone, she went out and bought a Galaxy S4. I am also due for an upgrade, but if Apple is not going to do anything about this, I amy also look to another manufacturer as well after having an 3S, 4 and 4S. Warranty of course is expired on her phone.

and the sad thing is that Apple will send free phones out to clowns to smash and drop them on youtube, but if you actually bought one, you are out of luck!
