The problem is not "programming," it's a hardware failure. The phone is out of warranty, but you can get an out-of-warranty replacement at a substantially reduced cost from a new phone, which is something no other manufacturer will do for you. That's what Apple is doing about it.

so your saying the solder is melting and reaching the transponder or WiFi antenna to the mother Bord or is it loosing contact on the mother and not the fact the the program is shouting down in a more complete way the when you do a battery complete drain or over heat shut down as appose to regulator shot down  in a sens going in to hibernation, you do know solder melts a over 300 degrees and if its hard wear then how is putting it threw the heat cycle fixing my phone ? and why is it the potion frozen or grayed and not just i have no reception to WiFi.

It happened to your mobile because you're trying to update through Wi-fi.
it can't be fixed through software troubleshoots, just replace or repair the device will work.

Latest news on this: My friend uses the hair dryer trick since half a year now and found out, that the wifi greyed out, when there are several wifis around.

When he comes home, there is only one wifi. The iPhone connects well.

When he was in a hotel, where he connected more than one wifi and when he returns later to that hotel, the iPhone messes up with the more than one wifis around and greyes out.

Thats what he explainded to me. He always fixes this with the hairdryer.

My grey out issue also occurred in a hotel first, but I can not remember the exact details. Meanwhile I have swapped my iPhone.

My old 4S got the greyed-out wifi syndrome as well as a non-functional bluetooth. Found this thread and tried the HalS method and it worked!

Heat gun for a few minutes, let it cool down. Voila! Both work again. We'll see how long it lasts.

Since so many report that this is a temporary fix, I wonder what could be going on to short that part of the circuit again?
