Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.

When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities â–¹ Terminal from the menu bar.

In the Terminal window, type this:

resetpassword

That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.

Select your boot volume if not already selected.

Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.

Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.

Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.

It's great that you want to help people here. That's what this site is all about. We're all other Mac users here, helping each other find solutions.

In the future, if you find a post that would be perfect to answer a question, copy and paste it, but also give credit to the original author (in this case, Linc Davis). "According to another helper here, Linc Davis . . . then paste his words. . .

That way, you've given credit to the original author. Just good forum manners.

(I was guilty of forgetting to do this one time, years ago, so I do understand. Just don't forget it in the future, OK?)

first try using your Apple ID to log in then reset password.

if you cannot do that restart in recovery mode. that is restart and hold down the command and R key untill mac restarts then go to recovery mode. go to utilities menu and choose terminal. type "resetpassword" without quotes and then press return. once reset password opens select account you wish to reset and type new password.

I don't know how to put credit from other people. I undertstood what you mean't completely.

Just put a link to the discussion and say "Read so and so's post". That way there is no misunderstanding.

There are some, however, that will say "you're only good at posting links to others work" or such drivel.....

In the end, expect more grief than what you will deserve for attempts to help....
