What exactly does "syncing" mean??

To my knowledge, syncing is about transferring files from one device to another, is this correct??

What I'm trying to do is to transfer files from my MacBook to my iPad. I followed all the instructions:

I connected my iPad to my computer using a USB drive.

Then, I opened iTunes and under "Devices", I clicked on my iPad.

Some stuff began to download, or, if it wasn't downloading, it called it "syncing."

Let's say I click on any tab. I click on the "Music" tab.

Then I click "Sync."

After I do that, nothing shows up on my iPad. Is there more I have to do???

This is pretty much all I've done, as no new box turns up, or nothing happens.

I seem to have enough capacity, as there seems to be some free space.

But...nothing happens...

Am I missing a step???

Thanks in advance.

Thanks to both of you:

Davinox:

Thanks, I didn't know you could delete files from one device and have it deleted on another.

randi:

You know, I did click on "Sync music."

I'm wondering, could I be looking on the wrong place on my iPad to find my synced files??? On my iPad I clikc on iTunes, then "Purchased", and yet, nothing shows up...

The other day, I did sync my info, and it worked. But I think I did something where I deleted my stuff on my iPad or chose an option to not have my stuff synced....could that be it??? I don't remember what I did.

But thank you for the link.

You sync apps from the Apps tab in your iTunes sync settings; TV shows are on the TV Shows tab and Books are on the Books tab. After syncing them to your iPad, your apps appear as icons on your iPad screen, TV shows appear in the Videos app (I believe...I don't have any), and books appear in the iBooks app, which you can download for free from the App store app on your iPad.

Diavonex:

Thanks for all the links!!!

Randers:

Yes, thank you for that info. The tv shows I have are free episodes, but for some reason they don't show up in my Videos tab. But it's okay, I think I'll be alright now.

There was no books tab on my iTunes, but I found the free books I downloaded in iBooks.

My main concern was the books. Anyway, thanks to both of you for all the help!!!! Thank you!!!

Using music as an example.

Connect the iPad to the Mac and launch iTunes.

Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.

Click on the Music Tab on the right.

Click on all of the albums or playlists that you want to sync - or the entire library if you like.

Click on the Sync Music Heading.

Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes

As stated, music is in the Music app on the iPad. iTunes on the iPad is a store - not a media player like on your computer. Any video content will be in the videos app and that included music videos.

You can set sync preferences in all of the various tabs of iTunes like in the example above for music .... Photos, apps, books, etc.
