I don't understand why my computer keeps saying that it restarted because of a problem.

Almost every night, after I put my computer to sleep, I get that error message. Mac Pro (Early 2008) Intel Xeon E5462 @ 2.8GHz, 16GB Ram, Mac OS x 10.8.2.

I am starting to think maybe there is a hardware problem? But I want to verify that it can't be a software problem before I take it in for repairs. Ideally I'd like to fix it myself because my AppleCare expired since it was from Early 2008. This problem only started happening in the last month or two. Asides from these random weird issues and shutdowns, the computer works very well. Super fast, responsive, and enjoyable to work with.

Oh, and one other thing. Lately I've been getting the repeated error message saying the disk drive couldn't burn because it couldn't get the right power level to calibrate the laser or something.

Thank you for your help!

Also, another puece of info: I have been using a brand new SSD and it works great, and had done a clean install on it. So I don't think there are too many problems with it. I have tried repairing permissions and also did a Safe boot twice to try to fix any problems. Also tried an SMC reset and Pram reset but it still seems to have the same issue.

Dec 28, 2012 7:26 AM in response to mb11689

With any SSD, step #1: make sure the firmware is current.

How you clone or install the OS also can differ.

Linc has a 2008 and 10.8.2 but then I would expect his system to be rock solid. Same cannot be said for more than a few 3,1 owners that... all the issues with power management and panics vanish if they go back or dual boot and keep both, when they use 10.6.8 instead. And of course ML and Lion dropped support for PowerPC code, drivers - a good reason to do a clean install and not carry any older apps, drivers and plugins with the new system.

Dec 29, 2012 12:19 PM in response to Linc Davis

This is a good point. I am going to reinstall the OS again on my SSD so I dfon't have any possible issues like that. i had tried to install some Lacie Kext file to use USB 3.0, but I'm not sure if that's causing the issue. Only way to find out is to get rid of it.

Additionally, some other helpful info... I disconnected all external peripherals, and so far the computer seems to not be having the issue. Will keep you updated.

I don't understand why my computer keeps saying that it restarted because of a problem.
