where is the airplay icon on my ipad

I have a new ipad, new apple tv, and am frustrated in not being able to mirror my ipad on the tv. I searched and followed the apple support step by step instructions, to no avail. I can't find the airplay icon on my ipad.

The ipad IS connected to apple tv, I can stream music and sharing is enabled, but i can't seem to be able to mirror it or play games on from the ipad to tv.. any ideas? thank you.

iPad 2, iOS 6.0.2

Welcome to the Apple Community.

Assuming both devices are on the same network and that AirPlay is not turned off on the Apple TV, then simply tap on the screen when you are watching content you wish to stream to your Apple TV, then tap the airplay icon that appears in the control bar, choose the Apple TV from the menu that appears.

When displaying the content you wish to mirror on the iPad 2 (or better), iPad Mini, iPhone 4S (or better), double tap the home button (quickly) and swipe the bottom row of apps to the right to reveal the playback controls, tap the AirPlay icon and select your Apple TV from the list of available devices.

Hail Cesar!! Thank you very much.

I just couldn't seem to find the airplay icon even when i double clicked the home button and slid the icons to the music player.. now I have it working.

Another Q for you: I usually have my Apple TV wired with ethernet cable for faster downloading of movies, so when I want to switch to mirroring my ipad, I need to unplug the ethernet to enable wifi or is there a way to seletct wifi or ethernet?
