Print to Canon IP4500 from iPhone/iPad?

Dear All,

I have just purchased an Airport Express and am happily streaming music from all my devices and printing to my Canon IP4500 from my Macbook Pro.

I cannot, however, get printing to work with any of my iPhones (4/4S) or my iPad (1st Gen, iOS 5). The devices complain on not finding AIrPrint printers - My impression was that the AirPort Express would work as a printer server for ensuring compatibility? Or have I misunderstood something? Printing works just fine from my Macbook (as already mentioned)...

If I missed something in the setup, I'd be happy to receive any pointers.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

No, your printer needs to be AirPrint compatible, and it's not. More details here:

An App like Print Central installed on your iPad will work with most printers, but unfortunately there is no way to guarantee that it will work with your printer.

Printopia is another popular App for this purpose.

Hi Dartiesdad,

If you are using a genuine Apple AirPort Base Station, and your Mac is fairly recent, and your Mac's Energy Saver settings are configured for "Wake on network access" then HandyPrint might wake a sleeping Mac for purposes of sending the print job.

A competing commercial product will do this, but I am not certain about HandyPrint.

I asked the developer to confirm this feature.

If you have the applicable hardware above and configured Energy Saver appropriately, try it.
