How do I update from Aperture 1.5.1.
OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
There is no upgrade option. The price of Aperture 3 on the App Store is comparable to what upgrade pricing once was, and the path to go down is to simply purchase the latest version from the App Store, and then let existing library be upgraded.

Just an add-on to Ernie's advice:
This support article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2518 has some advice with respect to upgrading Aperture 1 and Aperture 2 libraries - scroll down to the last paragraph:
"Additional Information: A note on upgrading your Aperture library"

Hi Ernie, thanks for the very quick response!
I should have mentioned, I bought an upgrade activation key back in 2011 for 99 euro.
If I download Aperture 3. trial, and use my activation serial number, will I then be able to upgrade?
There is a way to use such a serial for Aperture 3, and Leonie usually has the best link to recommend quickly at hand.
The reason I am punting that to Leonie, is that I have only downloaded and used the serial to a clean purchase of Aperture 3. When I bought it from the Apple Store, I chose to not buy the upgrade version. But that has since allowed me to download and install on my new MBP.

O.K. so I'll try to catch the ball, Ernie.
Kevin, you can download the trial here:
if you have an Aperture 3 upgrade key, you will need all previous serial numbers (Aperture 1, your upgrade key) to unlock the trial again.
I recommend to make sure you have a working backup of your complete system, before you upgrade. Does Aperture 1 still run? Then also create a vault of your library and repair your library, like recommended.
Run the installer, it will give you Aperture 3.1, then immediately upgrade to the current Aperture version with Software update. If you could not repair your Aperture library while still on Aperture 1, do it, when you launch Aperture 3 the first time. Hold down the ⌥⌘ key combination, while double clicking Aperture to launch into the Library First Aid panel. Select "Rebuild database" from the panel.

Thanks for the catch -- I had thought there was a more recent link, but now have found the origin of that one that you found at:

It is important, as you say, to first update Aperture via Software Update before ever launching it.
Btw, I have a 1.5.6 Library archived, and I made of copy of that, and asked 3.4.3 to open it, and it prompted of the needed upgrade to the library, but did it nicely. But this was only a 3 GB library.
