Windows XP SP3 driver for an iPod Nano Shuffle?

Hello.

I just hooked up a rarely used iPod Nano Shuffle (v1.2; Model: MC525LL) to my very old, updated Windows XP Pro. SP3 from someone who didn't want it. However, Windows doesn't recognize it (unknown device). iPod Nano Shuffle does turn on when connected. I assume it is charging (never owned one before)?

Is it really required to install and use iTunes for it to work even though I don't want to use iTunes and want to use a third party software? http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369 seems to say I need to install iTunes? Is there not a separate driver only?

Thank you in advance. 🙂
