Can I back up an Ipod if it was never sinked to Itunes before? If I restore it will I lose all photos and downloads? Got the Ipod for xmas, but we lost the password before sinking it to Itune. Don't want to lose music and photos.

Password to unlock the ipod (to get in it).
Connect the iOS device to your computer and restore via iTunes. Place the iPod in Recovery Mode if necessary to allow the restore.
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the iPod backup that iTunes makes.
You can redownload iTuns purchases by:

Did not work. When I click restore, it starts with a 1hr update and does nothing else afterwards. There are no further steps that come up and the ipod is still locked.
