If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to Restore your device...
Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and Restore...

If necessary Place the Device into Recovery mode...
unfortunately that didn't work. I received a message that it could not restore and now the ipod is black and won't turn on at all. Guess I will need to take it into Apple. Thanks for your help.
What did the error message say?
That this ipod could not be restored - something about the version. I updated itunes, made sure my mac was up to date, etc, but I think the ipod operating system might not be compatible with my version of itunes. Either that or some security issue, but I am not knowledgeable enough to mess with it. I'll just bring it in. Thanks anyway!
What OSX is on the Mac?
For a 4G in order restore you need iTunes version 10.7 or later and that requires OSX 10.6.8 or later.
my mac is 10.5.8 and the itunes is 10.6.1 - so there ya go!
I think if you restore on another computer you can still sync with your computer. See:
