You don't have to have Match, you can simply use HomeSharing from itunes installed on a computer (on the same WiFi network, of course).
The firmware was likley updated after the device left the factory. Not al all unsusual, for Apple or any other computer manufacturer).

This might be a stupid question but to turn off your apple TV, do you go to: settings>sleep now?
PS didn't mean to mark the questian aas solved when I had more..LOL
You can manually pu it to sleep as you describe. there is also a setting to automatically put it to sleep after a period of non use.
