Can I transfer my itunes to a MP3 player? newbie, help please

Hi, I need your help. I have a HP Media Center PC with all bells and whistles. I just learned about itunes. I downloaded a free song. I have also gotten 5 songs for free from a website called Connect (run by Sony).
what I was expecting to do was to go to Radio shack and purchase an MP3 player for $59.99. It's about all I can afford.
then I found out that the songs I downloaded from Connect cannot be transferred to an mp3 player unless it is a Sony MP3 player. The mp3 player in Radio Shack was not a Sony. but I did ask the salesman if I could do itunes with this and he said "sure". but I'm not sure now. I have read about all kinds of formats with downloading these songs. such as OPENMG format and something called ATRAC. See where I'm getting confused?
What I need to know is this: If I purchase songs from itunes and it goes on my hard drive, can I then purchase the mp3 player and transfer the songs so I can go for a walk and play my mp3 player. I can't afford an ipod.
Do I have to buy a special mp3 player to be able to use itunes. I can't find any information on this on the site.
I am a disabled person and could use some help.
thanks to anybody who can help me. Just need to know exactly what I should be buying to play songs on and do I have to download the songs in a special way or does itunes just do it for me. Also, I don't have an apple computer. but I have an APPLE user ID. Very confusing.

Yes, iPods can play mp3 files. All the little portable players can play non-protected mp3s.

It is when you get into DRM that you have to watch what will play on what.

I can't tell you what to buy, for that ebay price, it sounds like a shuffle, which has no display....kinda hard to find songs, but my husband likes his for the gym.

My brother in law has a SanDisk Sansa M230 512MB MP3 Player W/ FM Tuner, I think those are under $50.

Okay, first things first. Atrac, and i think openmg, are sony-only formats. iTunes might be able to change it to a different Apple format, but don't count on having much luck. Yeah, only Sonys can play Sony formats.

Next, iPods, of course, are used for iTunes. However, iTunes works just fine as a Media Player.

You DO NOT need an Apple Computer to download from iTunes, an PC with Windows will work just fine. Think of your Apple User ID as like a bank account; you go up to the bank, and you can take out money. With iTunes, you go to the Music Store, and take out songs (only you have to pay for 'em).

For purchasing songs, you can do it two different ways: First, you can either a) just hit buy song, put in your Apple ID, and it should download to your computer. Or, you can select several songs and put them into your "shopping cart," where you buy them all at once.

If you could give your mp3 player brand, it would help.

And I hope that that covers everything you asked. Sorry if it was confusing.

Okay, thanks guys. One more question from me.
From what you wrote and from what I understand, it would be easier for me to buy an ipod than to buy an mp3 player and worry about converting files from this format to that format, right?

If I save up and buy an ipod (which is the least expensive), is there a particular kind of ipod that will let me transfer the tunes from the Connect site and the itunes site. Or will I have to buy all my tunes from itunes and then transfer then to the ipod.
And when I buy my ipod, will it tell me exactly how to transfer the tunes from my computer to my ipod?

Right now, I have 6 songs in the library from connect and one free song from the itunes.
Can I put the stuff from both of these into an ipod or will the ipod only work with the itunes?

God, what would I do without you guys.
Thanks so much.

I just went to ebay (just to see what different ipods are out there).
i saw an auction for the following brand new EIP0 white ipod 512MB MP3/ WMA / ID3 / PLAYER

the asking bid was $2.99 and the shipping and handling was $39.99. it was from Hong Kong.
Being an ebay seller, I know this person wanted to save listing and final value fees so he upped the shipping and handling.
I also have seen that (and I may be wrong) that an IPOD is also an mp3 player. Is this correct?
What am I supposed to buy then?
Oh, confusing, confusing..

You mentioned:

SanDisk Sansa M230 512MB MP3 Player

Now if i purchase this (maybe this is the same one at Radio Shack, I'm going to check; will I be able to go to itunes, download any song I want and transfer it over to this SanDisk Sansa M230 512MB MP3 Player?

or will I have to convert any files? See where I'm coming from? Exactly what is the big difference between an ipod and a mp3 player. Why the big difference in price.

I'd like to get the best bang for my bucks but also I need to make it as simple as possible. I got the download down pat. I can do that. now the next step is getting the portable player and transfering files.
Hope you can give me my final answer.
you are all dolls.

sincerely,

Only iPods will be able to load songs directly from iTunes music store.

Any other device, you are going to have to burn an audio CD and re-rip it as a non-protected MP3 file.

iPods cost more because of demand, is my theory.

So, If you are wanting to use iTunes and its music store, I recommend getting an iPod.

If the portable player price is your main selection criteria, get a non-iPod and use a service like Musicmatch, Rhapsody, Napster, or Sony Connect.

Oh, I have one more question. Because I now have 6 songs in my Sony connect library, (and I can't use this with an ipod). And I will be buying an ipod, so I'll be using itunes.....

Is there a way that I can put these songs from the connect library into my itunes library.
I know you said that sony connect only plays with sony mp3 players. I didn't know that i would be using an ipod.

Do you think I can download the songs from the connect library onto an ipod? If not, is there a way to convert them into itunes so I can download them.
I know it's only 6 tunes but I love them. I'd like to save them and not just having them on my hard drive.

So if I buy the ipod, can I transfer the songs from Connect library into the ipod?

thanks guys.

Okay, let me see if I have this right.
I have a HP Pavillion Media Center. this should allow me to burn cds, right? I have never done this in my life but believe me I learn fast. I have two drives that I'm looking at right now on my tower.
The top drive says LightScribe DVD+-/CD Writer

The other drive says CD rom.

I presume, to burn a cd (or whatever it's called), I use the top Lightscribe thing, right?

so I guess I have to get a blank cd rewritable thing, place it in the top drive and copy the sonic stage (sony) songs onto that right? then I can get the ipod and transfer from the newly burned cd into the ipod, right?

I have absolutely no idea how to accomplish this but I'm willing to at least do the first step and burn the cd.

Now, here's my question. Many years ago, when I had my other HP pavillion,it came with a re-writable drive. I tried to burn something to it and I did not know what I was doing. I do remember that the cd was some kind of RW thing.

I probably have one of those in my house. They are over 5 years old. Is this what I have to use to put the songs on it.
do I have to go to the computer store and buy a new blank cd-rw (if that is indeed what I will be using).

I want to know exactly what kind of blank cd thing I have to put in the drive. And do I use the one marked Lightscribe.
See, once I know what to do, I'll figure out how to do it.
I'm going to search my room to find one of the old blank ones but I won't use it until you say, "yes, use it.".
I know I used to have a case of them. Never used them but they are still around.
Are they still compatible with my windows xp, HP Pavillion media center.

And I should tell you what I tried to do last night. I was researching all about converting files and I saw something that said "drag the files into your itunes folder and you should have the songs in their". so stupid me, I go to my start menu, open up the explore thing, I find the "sonic stage" thing, I see the itunes thing, I dragged and sonic stage into the itunes thing and sure enough, right in front of me a little message popped up showing me it was "copying files to itunes". So I said "holy sh*t, I actually did it", "i'm going to see my songs in my itunes folder". Well, that didn't happen. I opened up my itunes library and only my original itunes song was there. No songs from the sonic stage library was put in.
I have no idea what was copied into what. So what exactly did I do?

thanks for any help about the cd burning thing.
I mean, I have this HP Pavillion Media Center and I want to be able to figure out how to use it before I turn 80.
Thanks much.

Hello again. I just found the package of CD-RW Platinum recordable compact discs.
This is what it says on the box.

CD-RW PLATINUM 650 mb/74 min.
2x 4x rewrite speed

Are these the ones I put into the cd rom drive?

I don't know if this lightscribe dvd writer/cd writer, well I don't know if it's 2x or 4x or whatever.
i went to my computer, clicked on the cd-writer and opened up properties but it just gives me stuff like if I want to burn a cd, and how fast!!

i don't have a clue.
help, help help.

Well, I got ambitious, I opened up one of the cd rw things. I put it in the lightscribe, and i went to sonic stage and I clicked on one of my songs. it was Thriller by Michael Jackson. I right clicked and where it said "transfer". I clicked on it, then a whole screen filled up with the left side being the songs and the right side being my blank cd. I said to myself "oh, this is easy".
It asked me what type of file format and it would not do Mp3 so I clicked on ATTRAC (have no idea what that is).
Lo and behold, it did it. It copied all my songs onto the cd. It asked me what capacity I wanted, I chose mid. Didn't know what choosing max would accomplish. So it copied them all in one minute. So there I was with my new cd filled with songs, right.
I went to my computer, opened up the E drive (cd/rewritable) and there were my 6 songs. I tried to open up so I could listen and I get the message "windows cannot open up this file, To open this file windows needs t oknow what program created it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer. What do you want to do?
1. use the web service to find appropriate program, or 2. select the program from a list.

I did both options. When I clicked on use the web service. I was told windows cannot open this file. and when I did the select a program, I chose windows media player (it gave me other options such as itunes, etc. but I chose windows media player. It could not open the file.
so now I have a cd full of songs that I can't listen to.

Okay, what did I do wrong? did I use the wrong cd-rw. I copied the files so that went okay. Aren't you supposed to be able to burn the cd and then play it and listen to it on your computer, a cd player, or your car cd player. I don't have a car so don't care about that. I actually was experimenting to see if I could burn it. so did I burn it wrong?
Should I have opened it up in real player instead of windows media player. I went to tutorials but it gives no clues for newsbies like me.
thanks to anybody who knows what the heck I'm doing.

Melody, I'm not sure what's going on. My first suggestion is that CD-RW may be the problem & you need to use CD-R's. Most people use RW just to backup their music & use R"s for audio CD's as a lot of home stereo equipment do not like RW's. I just tried to access the Sony connect program on both my browsers to see what they say about burning audio CD's. Unfortunately, I can't access their site with either of my browsers. Does the Sony site have specific information about how to burn to disk? You will have to take a look. After looking at the Windows Media Player website, it looks like you will need to use WMP to burn your audio CD. So here's what I would suggest, use CD-R's, use WMP as your burning software, make sure you burn as an audio CD & not a data CD.

AHAHAHAHHAHA
SUCCESS, SUCCESSS SUCCESS ! User uploaded fileWell, almost. but i'm getting there.
I tried again. I took a blank cd-rw and put it in the lightscribe thing. I then put up the sonic songs on my screen. I then transferred them (using audio cd format).
Success. It copied perfectly.

then guess what I did.
I went to start menu, opened up programs, saw the sonic stage (that's the sony connect library) I had 6 songs there.
I copied and pasted them into itunes. I then put up my itunes screen. I just dragged the audio cd thing into the library thing and guess what??? all the songs copied.

So I have my itunes library filled with 6 of my favorite songs. I took the cd that I just burned and tried to play it on my old, old cd player. No luck. I put in fresh batteries and tried again. no luck. I then took a regular rock cd and tried to play it. no luck. So my cd player is not working or I'm doing something wrong. I checked the volume, everything.

Now here's my new question.

when I buy my ipod and hook it up and everything, will I be able to transfer my new itunes songs. Does it matter that they originally came from the sony connect song? I mean, they are now in my itunes library and itunes go with ipods, right.

I can't believe that I did this at my age. I'm amazed.

you are the best. So please tell me if you thing that when I buy my ipod I can transfer my itunes stuff into the ipod. That would be the only reason that I am buying the ipod.

thanks,
Your new techno friend, Melody
