how to update ipod touch 1st generation

I am trying to update ipod 1st generation so I can download apps. Under the settings->general.. there is no option for updates, all it has is About. I need to download 3.1 software. Please help.

You cannot upgrade your model over wireless. You must connect it to iTunes to upgrade it. iOS 3.1.3 is the last version for your model.
