Ideal is 8 DIMM slots filled.

667MHz work just 4% slower, hardly anything, while 8 DIMMs give a 17% boost to memory bandwidth.

I'd say 4x2GB is nice and basic today, while some apps like CS6 you really can't have too much expect 2x4GB FBDIMMs are not so cost effective.

Price drop to $36 for those 4GB kits - which I and more than a few others have bought and using.

Mac Pro you need (or add) the large RAM heat sinks for extra cooling.

Those are just your standard PC and with small less efficient heat sinks.
