When I try to back up my iPhone 4 I receive an error message that there's not enough room on my computer for the back up even though there is.  This issue started yesterday after installing the latest version of iTunes (11.0.1).  I have a 16GB iPhone, and I have over 90GB of free space on my hard drive so there shouldn't be an issue.  I have ~378MB of free space on my phone.  I would like to upgrade to the iPhone 5, but I want to make sure I back up my phone first.  Any help would be appreciated.

378 MB on the phone may not be enough to "stage" the backup, so try freeing some space by temporarily deleting music or apps.

It's also possible that the current backup on the computer is corrupt; try deleting it by going to iTunes Preferences, Devices tab.

Finally, another option is to back up to iCloud. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5262 for backup options. Also, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109

Thanks for your help.  I tried temporarily not syncing the music and it still wouldn't back up.  I also tried deleting the most recent backup and that didn't work, either.  If I back up to iCloud, it won't back up everything on my phone, right?

The backup only backs up data, not apps or music, regardless of whether you back up to the computer or iCloud. You should still have all of your music in iTunes on your computer, so restoring it is no problem. If you have non-iTunes music on the iPhone that you have deleted from your computer you have a bit of a problem. The only solution to this is iTunes Match with iCloud.

But I think the primary problem is that you don't have enough free space on the phone. You can delete music from the phone to free up space, then try the backup again. I'd suggest at least 1 GB free before trying.

Also I just tried backing up to iCloud (without the music on my phone), and I still received the same error message about not being able to back up because there wasn't enough room on my computer.

Then I'm sure that the problem is not enough free space on the phone.

When I tried to back up to iCloud, I didn't have any of my music on the phone and had 9GB of free space.
