Q: AirPlay Mirroring

can I use mirroring with an Apple TV on a mid 2010 macbook pro? is there an alternative?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

No, not natively. That requires the newer processor for video encoding. The alternative is airparrot, which does it in software.

I have a late 2010 macbook air with Snow Leopard and it airplays. I don't know why or how it does, since Apple clearly states that only newer 2011 models will airplay, but I was surprised to find that when I clicked on the airplay button on my mac it transferred it over to my TV.

That is basic airplay, not mirroring
