What does the gray dotted circle in iTunes mean?

The easiest solution I have found is to go to your main music list at the top of all your playlists labeled, "music." This has all of your music, or it should. Simply find the song with which you have the infamous dotted circle issue. Right click on that song and select "Create MP3 Version." This will instantly create a new file (Should be created right under the original file) that you can drag and will join the rest of your playlist. If you want to keep the original, you might want to rename the new file with "MP3" after the title to know it from the file with the circle. It worked for me, hope it works for you. You might be able to do several at a time by holding the control button while pointing and clicking on several songs. Then right click on the group for the same result...haven't done it, but just thinking it will save time if you have several songs to fix.
Good luck! ➕
what worked for me was to deselect "Sync Music" in iTunes and click apply. It deleted all of the previously synced music from the phone. I then re-selected "Sync Music" clicked apply and it synced everything correctly this time. No more grey circles next to songs and all of my playlists are on the phone.
So what it seems to mean, based on my recent experience, is that its in the collection directory, but they underlying data has not been synced into place (ie its not on the device or the file could not be found).
I have been looking and looking for this answer to this problem all over the web and I cant find it. I am just going to have to call apple.. I don't know why these companies have to make such difficult GUI. It should be very straight forward and fool proof.. I could name several examples but I wont. Please fix this apple or show us.................

hey everyone this really is the key, was having the problem, make sure you are dragging the file from your library, not your files. once i dragged from the library the circle went away 🙂
I have been having the same freaking problem and i need a SOLUTION ASAP!😠
TRIED THAT alot of times but it wont wor😢
?
Give it a min. It's loading/trying to add on itunes🙂
Worked for me!! Thanks
mmm I tried both and nothing bro
I signed out my apple store account on both itunes and my IOS device and then syncd - resolved.
I'm using an IPhone but next time I get the problem, I'll try your approach. If it works for me I guess it'll come down to the question of which workaround is the easiest.

5 hours later... this one worked. It seems to be different for everyone. Keep trying.
