Q: What does the gray dotted circle in iTunes mean?

I'm trying to download an audiobook in several parts using Overdrive Media Console.  A few of the parts show up on the iPod, but most of the parts show up with a dotted gray circle to the left of the title.  What does this gray circle mean, and how can I get these parts to play?

I had the problem of the 'Dreaded ring of dots'

I looked endlessly for a solution. All I wanted to do was put music (that worked perfectly fine on my itunes) onto my phone. I tried many things unchecking boxes, rechecking boxes, connecting the phone, unconnectig the phone, making a human sacrafice to the gods of itunes. None of it worked. I happened upon a mystical peice of information contained within the catacombs of the internet.

The problem that I was having was that my phone wasn't synching to my computer. Granted it showed up on my itunes and i could interact with the various tabs but i couldn't add any music onto my device. So I followed the steps contained on this website http://www.geeksquad.co.uk/articles/Mobiles/2012/08/why_won_t_my_iphone_sync_wit h_itunes ..... low and behold.... I could transfer my songs onto my iphone.

I followed all the steps and the one that worked for me personally was the step where you rename your 'sync services' folder to 'old sync services'.

Hope this helps people as I was ready to take a hammer to both pc and phone and reverting back to a walkman.

    Hello Guys,

After many trials, I figured out my problem...

First, like Zewall above, I tried everything you guys suggested, still did not work...

The problem was in my icloud sync process!

I mean, I’ve rebooted the iphone back to original factory many times, but I always synched to my icloud just afterwards to get all my contacts and apps.

After I was trying to add the music in all possible ways, no success, the damm dotted circle was there and no songs from the library was loaded to the iphone.

Just by mistake, this last time I did not logged in with icloud in the rebooting process of the iphone, and thus no apps nor contacts were synched with my icloud account, so the iphone was just like new!

I tried now to synch the songs and WORKED !!!

The songs from the library was loaded to the iphone!!!

Well, I had to add my contacts again, had to download all the apps one by one again..

But at the end solved my problem!!!

For me, I had only to right-click on one of the songs with the circle and uncheck it; then right click on the song again and check it. After that, the transfer of all the songs to my Iphone 5 resumed.

I had the same problem. And I hope my solution will help you...

Thanks to aprezotto post it found out that when I wipe and restore iphone from iTunes backup (instead of iCloud backup) songs were properly sent from iTunes to iPhone. It works for me indeed.

In my opinion the problem lays a little bit deeper. When I turned on brand new device I decided to choose Restore from iCloud (which was iPad backup). I believe that this can be a reason, that iPhone restoring face problems when it is restored from different backup than iPhone backup itself.

I have just wiped this iphone then turned it on and chosen "New iPhone"

Ather that you can still join it to you Apple account and iCloud as well ( so you will still have you Contacts, Calendar etc.),

Unfortunately you will have to write down application which were instaled and install it again.

But the most important is: SONGS will appear on your iPhone

    What do you think?

    Cheers

    I'm having the same problem.

    17gb free on my phone

60gb free on the drive that holds my itunes libray and my overdrive library

    but

2gb free on my c drive

If I let my c drive get less than that the uploads fail - selectively. Currently working on a book with 8 parts. It dropped 5 & 6 but copied 7 & 8.

My easy hit for space is to go to %temp% and delete what I can. Then I delete the tracks from itunes and transfer just those tracks back over.

    Hope this helps.

My solution was to delete the bad selections, go to the summary tab in itunes and change the setting to "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 ACC (I put a check mark in the section). I usually down load the books without this section checked. 2 out ten chapters would not load correctly. This solved the problem. I hope this is helpful. BTW, I am getting books from the library and use Overdrive to transfer them to itunes.

Using a PC with Windows 8.1

I''v actually spent HOURS on the phone with Apple over this problem. Other hours at the Genius bar and have emailed diagnositce  to Apple (yesterday was most recent)!

Finally, went back today, played around and came up with something that worked, at least for me.

I'm synching from Itunes (latest version) to Iphone, mostly audiobooks Albums will synch to Iphone but some tracks will be grayed out.

What wotked for me was to:

1 right click on the 1st track with a grayed-out circle

2.. on the menu that comes up click on "Uncheck Selection" (or "Check Selection", if that appears)

         3. Right click on the track again.

         4.  on the menu that comes up click on "Check Selection" (or "UnCheck Selection", if that appears)

The tracks should now begin synching. If they don't, go to the next unsynched track and repeat the process.

Now, somtimetime all of the unsynched tracks will synch and Duh!, some tmes only some will synch.

Keep repeating the process until all are synched.

    Good luck.

I'm using an IPhone but next time I get the problem, I'll try your approach. If it works for me I guess it'll come down to the question of which workaround is the easiest.
