Q: Air Play Mid-2010 Macbook Pro.  Bummed

I have been wanting Apple TV for a year now and finally received it for Christmas today.  All along I had assumed that my macbook pro (mid 2010), which I paid a lot of money for and is still within our 3 year apple care warranty, would be mirrored onto the Apple TV.  After finding out it does not work because I have an earlier version of MP, I am extremely disappointed.  Is this Air Parrot really good.  I am so mad that I have to pay for something else (being that Apple TV already costs $99) all because I don't own the latest version of Macbook Pro----who can afford to keep buying the latest laptop from Apple when they run close to $1500??  Any Apple Technician that can answer or help would be appreciated.  I love Apple products--we own ipod touches, ipads, ipad mini, iphone 4s's, iMac, Macbook Pro----come on--we have given Apple a lot of cash!  A little help here.......

MacBook (13-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

As you already know AirPlay requires hardware encoding that was simply not engineered in pre-2011 Macs. AirTunes was problematic under challenging network conditions and the complaints were deafening, until 802.11n became more common and they slowly subsided. No company wants complaints, so Apple chose to make compliant hardware a prerequisite for AirPlay. Hardware encoding solves a lot of potential problems.
