Wake reason: EC.DarkPME (Maintenance)

My macbook air 2012 wakes up when lid closed. Power Nap switched off, wake on lan and bluetooth disabled. SMC alreedy reseted. Power config files were deleted and rebooted. In console i found this:

What is the EC.DarkPME?

Dear friends!

Finally I found a solution to my question!!!

After some firmware modification Apple realized two ways of MB sleep: 1) standby, 2) autopoweroff. I have old MB air where command pmset -g prints only parameters related to standby regime and that MB sleeps very well. In my MB Air mid 2012 pmset - g prints both - standby and autopoweroff - and they all were enabled. Now I set autopoweroff to 0 and my MB goes to hibernate with pleasure and sleeps all days and nights 🙂 No battery discharge at all !!! Now when I opening lid - MB thinks during 1-2 sec and then I see my Desktop.

Here cutted power log:

Aug 11 10:59:48 MBA.local powerd[16] <Notice>: Clamshell Sleep: Using BATT (Charge:76%)

Aug 11 10:59:48 MBA.local powerd[16] <Notice>: Clients requested wake events: None

Aug 11 11:09:52 MBA.local powerd[16] <Notice>: DarkWake [CDN] due to EC.SleepTimer/SleepTimer: Using BATT (Charge:76%)

Aug 11 11:09:52 MBA.local powerd[16] <Notice>: hibmode=0 standbydelay=600

Aug 11 11:09:52 MBA.local powerd[16] <Notice>: Maintenance Sleep: Using BATT (Charge:76%)

Aug 11 11:09:52 MBA.local powerd[16] <Notice>: Clients requested wake events: None

Aug 11 21:40:28 MBA.local powerd[16] <Notice>: Wake from Standby [CDNVA] due to EC.LidOpen/Lid Open: Using BATT (Charge:78%)

Aug 11 21:40:28 MBA.local powerd[16] <Notice>: hibmode=0 standbydelay=600

Here is my pmset settings (on battery power):

pmset -g

Active Profiles:

Battery Power -1*

AC Power -1

Currently in use:

standbydelay 600

standby 1

halfdim 1

hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage

darkwakes 0

disksleep 10

sleep 10

autopoweroffdelay 14400

hibernatemode 0

autopoweroff 0

ttyskeepawake 1

displaysleep 2

acwake 0

lidwake 1

I tested with hibernatemode 0 - it means keep image in memory. MB also sleeps well with mode 3 - combined regime.

Good luck with yours!!!

I unpacked update 2.0 with recipe (http://tdev.me/2010/11/extract-acpi-tables-from-firmware-update-file/) and found 2 files with darkPME strings:

MacBookAirandMacBookProUpd2.0.pkg\System\Library\CoreServices\powerd.bundle\powe rd

MacBookAirandMacBookProUpd2.0.pkg\System\Library\Extensions\AppleACPIPlatform.ke xt\Contents\PlugIns\AppleACPIEC.kext\Contents\MacOS\AppleACPIEC

Maybe they are responsible for wakes (maybe not 🙂)

I have MBA 2011 which is not affected dark wakes and I will try to copy same files to my MBA 2012

UPDATE: I received a call from Apple Support; Engineering confirms that there is a problem with Firmware Update 2.0 (they have heard from other users as well)

So, I guess we will have the same issue until a new update is fixed.

On a curious note: two nights ago after I had done all the updates, I put my computer to sleep, and next day there had been no drainage at all. I checked the console log and there was no "DarkPME (Maintenance)" activity. Very strange. It only happened once.

As an FYI -- I'm having the same issue with my MID MBA 2012. I went to the genius bar 5 times, and tried he following:

Visit 1 - Resetting the SMC (Result: No Success)

Visit 2 - Resetting SMC, DNS Cache, and Sleep Image (This had success for a week, not sure if it was coincidence)

Visit 3 - Reformatted With New Updates Install (Result: No Success)

Visit 4 - Apparently the genius thought the reformat was done wrong at the store (the first time). But i allowed him to do the same thing, so reformatted with new updates (Result: No Success)

Visit 5: No Action, genius representative tried to tell me this was normal activity. I did not agree and requested to raise with an engineer. I'm like there is no way my relatively new computer should be draining 25% + overnight.

Genius Follow Up: Sent me a capture data program. I ran the program and sent the engineer the result. We will see.

Did you guys notice the sudden drain due to any specific reason? Firmware Update, Exposure to Heat, D/L a program etc.? For me, it was really just sitting in my apartment, so i don't see anything physically that changed.

Will keep you posted once the engineer comes back.

Summarizing all post I may notice that sudden battery drain is due dark wakes of macbook - for short period mac wakes to connect WiFi or Lan. If it will happens one time in hour it will be ok, but it repeats every 5 minutes, so battery drains faster. This behavior starts after firmware update 2.0 and Apple engineers know about this problem.

It will be interesting to read engineer's feedback

Same problem here on my MBA 2012.

Waking from hibernate every 5-7 minutes which depletes the battery.

I have fiddled with various pmset adjustments, including only using hibernatemode=25 (i.e. forced hibernation when going to sleep), but the machine still wakes up every 5 minute to do whatever it is doing.

I would really like to have the confidence of hibernate back, so I know for sure that there is just as much juice on the machine as when I left it. Of course we could just shut down, but I really like (the idea of) the auto standby->hibernate feature :-)

I really hope Apple is listening and will issue an update soon.

Christian Calderon, did you get any detail from the Apple engineer on when to expect an update?
