Q: Some q's from new aperture user

Hi,

Ive just started using Aperture. I had iphoto but found it very limited so brought aperture instead (and even got apple to refund my iphoto!).

Anyway i have a few questions, i don't want to start new topics for each question so i'll just put them all here:

1. My big issue is sorting the photo's. I like to sort by date. i know when you go into projects view, they are automatically sorted by date. however i have an issue where say i have 20 photos taken with different cameras of the same event. The metadata for the date/times could be different. if i select all the photos and batch change the date and time, for some reason it only seems to change 1 picture rather then every one. any ideas?

2. I know aperture won't read video formats not supported by iphones etc. Is there any easy way to convert? i have 100's of GB's worth of videos in other formats. On my mac mini even with 16gb ram it takes decades to convert even a 10 min clip.

3. When you go into project view, the title of the album in terms of how much you can view is very limited. is there any way to change this? for example if the title is 'neil and janes wedding' you will probably just about see 'neil and ja....' everything else will be cut out, very difficult to identify albums and also i don't want to go into the album just to see what it is.

OS X Mountain Lion, SSD 16gb RAM

You may have the "Primary Only" flag set. Then changes may only be applied to the primary selection. Disable it. See this User Tip for how to reset the flag:

Keywords or ratings are applied only to one of the selected images - why?

I know aperture won't read video formats not supported by iphones etc. Is there any easy way to convert?

Have you tried, if your videos really are unsupported? Which formats do you use? Here is a list of supported formats, but more may be supported, I can play quite a few Quicktime formats that are not on the list. Aperture 3: About Video and Audio formats in Aperture

You can always set Quicktime Player as an external video editor and view any video you can view in Quicktime.

Where do you store your videos now? It is not compulsary to include them into the Aperture library as well. If you convert them to migrate them to Aperture you will only risk to lose quality. And a high-quality conversion will need time.

    3. When you go into project view, the title of the album in terms of how much you can view is very limited. is there any way to change this?

Do you mean the thumbnail view in projects view? You can drag the slider in the lower right corner of the window to increase the thumbs, and this will give more space for the titles. Also can you click on a thumbnail to open the Info panel, like in iPhoto, for example:

    hi thanks that helped,

    re the videos;

i want to have it all in aperture simply to make it easy to browse.

the majority of my albums contain videos as well as pics. so if im using aperture as my photo browser, it doesn't make sense to have to go into another app to view videos of the same event.

the files in question are either .avi or .mpg which aperture doesn't seem to play.

Aperture can play AVI movies and additional mpg formats, if you install drivers. I installed perian and flip4mac, to support windows formats and Aperture opens many AVIs without problem.

So no conversion was necessary for me.

i didn't know this, do you just install the codecs on your mac and aperture will sudenly recognise the formats? do you know which codecs i would need to get aperture to open .avi and .mpg files? as they are my main concerns. thanks

    I have installed Perian:

         http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22923/perian

    and Flip4Mac:

         http://en.softonic.com/s/flip4mac:mac

With these codecs installed Aperture is able to play some video formats, that it could not play previously.

ill give these a try later, thanks.

got another really annoying issue with imported photos (especially older pics that dont have any tags for dates etc).

if i highlight multiple photos and change the date, sometimes the date on some pics will change completly to a random date. really annoying. it means that instead of highlighting say 30 pics from the same event and changing the date, i have to go through and select maybe 5 at a time and do it then it works.

    weird and annoying,

What kind of tags are talking about? Each image file has at least a creating date and a modification date?

if i highlight multiple photos and change the date, sometimes the date on some pics will change completly to a random date.

Are you changing the "date created" field in the "Info" panel? Changing multiple dates this way is indeed not very reliable. I'd suggest to use the "Lift&Stamp" tool to set multiple images at once to the same date created field.

Or, if you want to shift the date of several files by a fixed increment, use the "Adjust Date and Time" command from the Metadata menu.
