I can't install the new itunes after downloading the message says "this saftware requires mac OSX 10.6.8 or later" I have a new iphone 5 that I can't use until I update my itunes. What do I do?

Click on the Apple icon.. Top left in Finder...
> About this Mac > Version...what does it say?
Click here, check that the computer meets the system requirements, and if it does, buy the DVD.

What Mac are you trying to upgrade iTunes on?
What version of OS X is it currently running?

You will need to Upgrade to Snow Leopard to get a Compatible version of iTunes to Sync your Device.
Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...

If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...

After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
Thanks it looks like my system will work with that. Also, what's the best way to backup the system before I do the upgrade?
Get yourself an External Hard Drive... and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like
SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
or CCC http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
You will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.
(Get an EHD that is at least equal to your current Drive...)
Thanks so much for your help! I am having problems backing up to my external hard drive. I downloaded CCC and when I try to do the backup, it says the source (my external hard drive) is not writable. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I've never used it before, it is my boyfriends and he uses it with his PC. Do I need one specifically for a mac?
If the hard drive is formatted as NTFS then the Mac will not be able to write to it.
