reset open firmware password

hi guys
having MAJOR trouble with my imac
g4 iMac flat panel 15" 700mhz 256mb ram (2 x 128mb ram cards) 40 gig hdd running OSX 10.2 currently

okay there's the specs NOW - please read ALL this before jumping to an easy answer because i assure you i've tried

i need to know how to get rid of the open firmware password
currently it boots up and looks for a network OS or something, it has a pic of a globe and then after not finding one it has a folder with a question mark/apple osx twin faces logo thing.

open firmware protection seems to be on so that i:
can't boot from CD, can't boot into any other modes like single user or target mode etc, cant flash the PRAM (cmd + opt + p + r)

now everyone has been saying that to reset this you need to change the ram around (make it more or less) and then restart it by flashing the PRAM
i have done this and it doesn't work
i have taken out ALL the ram and started it, taken out the little battery on the board (cos i read that if your battery is flat it will flash the PRAM automatically), changed the ram up and down. (i have 1 x 128mb ram that is up inside the imac and 1 x 128mb ram that is on the bottom of the imac, i also have 2 x 512mb ram sticks for the bottom of the imac so I have been changing the ram up and down with these, although it should have worked just by taking out the original 128 stick from the bottom)

when i try to flash the PRAM i turn it on while holding (cmd + opt + p + r) after i've changed the ram around. normally i'm told that the machine will reset itself and you will hear the start chime (duuhhhmmmmm) and you have to wait and hear it a couple of times and then get into Open firmware command thing and change the settings there. after moving the ram and everything i try to flash the PRAM but it still doesn't respond, the Open Firmware security is still blocking the keyboard for some reason.

I do not know what to do! someone please give me some other advice
i've got no idea what to do short of take it in and get it fixed

i'd even settle for people suggesting me passwords!

i've tried 'password' 'password1' 'adminpass' 'administrator' 'imacg4' 'mac' 'apple' 'userpass' etc
if you can think of some more obvious ones that i may not have tried PLEASE let me know!

thanks heaps
i dearly want to get this thing fixed and working

I'm not sure Open Firmware password is set on your machine... if OFP is set you would get asked for a password very early in the boot process, before the Mac gets to looking for a startup disk. From your description it sounds like your Mac is looking for a network boot disk.

Firstly try holding OPTION at startup to see if you are given a selection of disks to boot from. You shuold choose your own startup disk.

If this doesn;t work, have you tried booting directly into Open Firmware and doing some resets there?

1. at boot hold cmd + opt + o + f

2. You should come to the Open Firmware prompt. Type:

reset-nvram <return>

3. type reset-all <return>

Your computer will restart.

Sorry - ymmv here, and I forgot our Macs run security-mode full in Open Firmware so that is the behavior we see.

I think the default Apple OF pretction is security-mode command so what you're seeing is probably correct.

For more info, plus an app which will apparently recover your OF password, check http://www.securemac.com/openfirmwarepasswordprotection.php

You may have reset your PRAM at the same time as setting your Open Firmware password. PRAM stores the chosen startup volume. Your Mac has defaulted to the wrong, network startup volume after the reset. And you can't reset the startup volume without entering your OF password.

I think after you add or subtract some dimm, you have to reset the pram 3 times. I just read that at the securemac site.

I never even put an Open Firmware Password in and that's the only way I can get anything on my screen. I've tried all the words I can guess, but Apple put a time delay trick in there so it takes longer and longer to put another password in.

I think my laptop invented its own protection from me!
