I've replaced the battery and doubled the RAM. Still things are very slow. Ideas?

I can get the machine up to the Apple logo and then the grey fan freezes. Even when I try to boot up from my external OS.
If your 'external OS' is an external boot drive i suspect then that you may have to reinstal the OS.
How do I do this if my Mountain Lion is on my external drive and not on a disk?
Is there a way to connect my iMac to my MacBookPro and work on it that way? or create a bridge between the external drive and the iMac & MBP?
