How do I eject a CD when the sys prefs default to it as start-up disk

I am trying to erase my wife's previous MacBook Pro (and then my 17") due to new MacBook pro's. She transferred via migration assistant with no problems. Now I want to erase her old one for me to transfer my data from my 17" MacBook Pro. I tried using my tech tool deluxe CD to start up from then do the erase. However the Mac will not read the CD and the system prefs are set to use the CD as the start-up disk. I can't get the disk out!!!

Once it is out I still need to do the transfers etc. What's the best way to accomplish this.

Many thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive

Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:

1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the

left mouse button until the disc ejects.

2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.

3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.

4. Press COMMAND-E.

5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in

your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:

/usr/bin/drutil eject

If this fails then try this:

Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

You must boot from an installer DVD to erase the drive unless it is running Lion or Mountain Lion.

I did find the answer, hold down the trackpad and do a hard start.

I was not very clear, my bad. I had no finder or anything else. It was trying to restart and would not.

Now I need a way to erase the old Mac. I've been using Macs since 1984, and the new technology is just passing me by!

Thanks for your prompt reply!
