Hello.
Does a pure cable (no adapter) exists from the newer Apple MacBook Pros (e.g., 13.3" MacBook Pro (A1278))' Mini DisplayPorts to HDTVs' HDMI ports exist? Or does one have to get an adapter to use with HDMI cables? If it exists, then where can be bought one from local retail stores (e.g., Best Buy, Apple, Costco) in LA/OC, CA, USA?

Just the adapter, as afr as I know.
It makes more sense to make lesser-expensive adapter that is 6 inches long rather than 20 varieties of cables in lengths from 2 ft through 30 ft.

Thanks. I noticed its fine print said it doesn't do audio? Is it because of this specific cable or are they all like that? I re(member/call) newer versions of HDMI cables can do audio, video, network, etc.
I would suspect it is that cable. As you probably know HDMI does support audio, but I don't think that your MBP (A1278) a mid 2009, supports audio via the minidisplay port. Thus it may be a moot point. If I am wrong, a web should provide you with one that does.

According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4132 and https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do , MBP (A1278; MD102ll/A) is from mid-2012. I will try http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Rocketfish%26%23153%3B+-+Mini+Display+Port-to-HDMI+A dapter/2343706.p?id=1218321954502&skuId=2343706&st=mini%20displayport&cp=1&lp=1 since the local Best Buy store has it and supports audio.
For less than $7, you can order this adapter from Monoprice. Works very well, carries both audio and video. Can't beat the price, service or product.

Lets identify the exact model MBP that you have. By my records show an A1278 is a mid 2009 unit. Now you have introduced a new number MD10211/A. Please open SYSTEM PROFILER (or System Information)>HARDWARE>HARDWARE OVERVIEW. What does it say next to "Model Identifier'?

A 2009 13" MBP is 5.5

A PURE cable, MDP>HDMI, IS an ADAPTER. It just has a longer cable between the 2 different ends then the standard adapters.

It says MacBookPro9,2. Anyways, I got it to work on my client's two Samsung HDTVs with two HDMI cables. It took me a while to figure out the audio part since Mac OS X was using internal speakers and I had to manually tell it to use HDMI for audio. Thanks. 🙂

I entered into Google search THUNDERBOLT HDMI CABLE and there are other candidates available. The few that I looked at did not mention if they transmitted sound or not.
Since I do not wish for me to have all the fun, I will let you continue the search on the Internet. If there is no mention of sound transmission, I suggest you contact the vendor for assurance that it does prior to purchase.

No. Thunderbolt is actually a multipurpose connection on Apple computers. Primarily it is designed (by Intel) for very fast data transmission but apple also has it designed ii so that it also can perform the same functions that the older Minidisplay port does on older MBPs.
HDMI is a video/voice transmission protocol analogous to the older DVI or VGA that uses a connector unique to it. You will find HDMI connections on virtually all new TV's and now on the new retina MBP's.
