Ipod not able to connect/recognized in itunes

Before I updated itunes, my ipod was simply not recognized when plugged it in by USB. No shaded device in side bar, nothing. I updated itunes(64-bit version) and now when I plug in my ipod I get this caution icon notice..."This ipod cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the itunes installer to remove itunes then install the 64-bit version. I have that version. I have removed and reinstalled numerous times. help
