My wife gave me her iPod Touch v6.0.1. but I can't get it recognised

I can't get it recognised in Windows Vista or Windows 7. I have uninstalled iTunes and checked that all the components have been removed from the the C:\. I reinstalled iTunes, still no good. Any ideas?
